No military service for me, just like you-know-who, I received a low 300's lottery number in the Wednesday, July 1, 1970, Vietnam draft lottery.

If not for that lucky break, I wanted to be a Pfc. in the USMC, just like Pfc. We had a Veterans Day ceremony at school yesterday, and the Marines recruiter who has worked with many of my students (I have three seniors who have completed MEPS already) was the guest speaker.

There were two parts of his speech I liked best: 1. To appreciate the "silence" provided by the armed forces of America—many areas of the world aren't so fortunate. 2. "Service" is a word we don't use as often as we should, along with a challenge for the students to find their way to it, whether through the military, police, firefighting, teaching, healthcare, etc. or volunteerism in the community.

Happy Veterans Day to all that served.

May God Bless all of the US military veterans who have provided all of us the freedoms that we enjoy today.

No matter what their MOS was/is - all are important contributions to our country, our freedoms, and our society.

God Bless them all. And hey, give them a thanks when you can.

Let us not forget !

The US Marine who never took credit for raising the flag on Iwo Jima is Corporal Harold Keller. He kept all to himself. Got a job after WWII at the Post Office. Never told his story about his actions on Iwo Jima.

Another veteran who became a quiet hero.

There are many quiet heroes all around us today. Maybe a few reading here could thank a veteran the next time that they encounter one !
