Photo File Size?
How do you go about changing the file size on a photo in order for it to be posted? Also, what is the relationship between photo size (WXH) and file size? Some large photos have small files and some small photos have large files. Adjusting the individual photo size doesn't seem to change the file size.

Crop, resize, compress

What's not equal is that you can compress the picture when saving it as a JPEG file so it takes up less disk space. Big (many pixels) pics heavily compressed can be smaller (less MB) that a smaller (less pixels) pic that has little compression. The tradeoff is that high compression can lead to loss of detail and an introduction of artifacts. You have to decide on a picture by picture basis as what is acceptable to you. As for changing either the file size and/or compression ratio - the above posts list some of the many programs that can be used to do both. Listed in order, what I do is crop the picture first then resize it (change the number of pixels) and then adjust the JPEG compression to shrink the file size.

Cropping advice - artistic
OK, I'm resurrecting an old thread because I ran across an article that while on the artistic side, still deals with cropping. I often find the decision of what to leave in or crop out of a photo, that aspires to be more than a snap shot, to be painful. Frankly I "hoover" at it. But there's method behind the madness (though perhaps not my madness) and for those who run across this post in the future, well you might find the following of some interest.
