Paying it Back to the Lakes Region

The recent amex commercial highlighted Lake Winni and it was viewed with pride by all. What else are people doing to give back to an area we all love? Some of the good causes I am aware of are:

I also would like to 2nd the listing of the NH Humane Society. Dianne and I are active supporters of these folks and have donated funds, adopted the "older" animals that people don't usually want to take on and fostered Momma cats with new babies.

But the reason this thread is so wonderful is that it highlights the Positive. Seems to me that sometimes we get sidetracked to the Negative.

Taxes, Speed Limits Traffic Circle designs..... Etc. Don't get me wrong, I read all of those. They are informative and serve as a forum to discuss issues that are important. BUT... it's great to see this type of thread too..

Aside from the many charitable organizations there are to contribute to, a big round of applause to all of those who serve voluntarily as an officer in their local associations giving their time, often tirelessly and thanklessly to improve conditions in their own little corner of the world.

Although we're having trouble locating someone (so far) this year with a boat to help us out on Sunset Lake, I've become involved in the Volunteer Lake Assessment Program (VLAP) through the NH DES as a way of "paying it back". Another round of applause to ALL OF THESE FOLKS who monitor the over 800 lakes and ponds in NH for water quality.

Did you know that NH residents give more $$ and time to charity and volunteer programs, per capita, than any other state? I'll find the real stats for that for y'all...

Belknap County has the highest breast cancer rate in the state of NH.

The great thing about the WLNH Children's Auction is that it also gives to other great organizations in need in the Lakes Region, throughout the year. And, you can volunteer or contribute in so many ways!

I even know people who wait to do their Christmas shopping at the auction, to give back to the community during the holiday shopping season! What a great concept to give to the community by SHOPPING!!! =)

If you are on the East side of the lake one of the many charities that needs your help is the Lake Region Humane Society. They have moved into a new facilities in Ossipee from Tuftonboro. They are very professional and easy to reach.

I am sorry, but not surprised, that no one mentioned the Lake Winnipesaukee Watershed Association (http://www.winnipesaukee.org/index.htm). This is a great group (I worked for them in 2000) working hard and often silently to protect this great resource. This is one of the organizations featured in the Laconia Citizen article from last week that first brought the AMEX commercial to folks attention. If you don't have time to volunteer with this group, financial help is always welcome!
