I think the technical term is recto-cranial inversion.

And, yes, this is a prime example. And, no, insurance does not typically cover this, as "on ice" is not generally considered "off road."

Funny how it seems many of the vehicles that suffer this fate are late models.

But, you have to review the policy as every insurance company has different policies and also it depends on the state regulations as well, Only the person who owned the vehicle will know or not, and thier insurance agent, lets hope they find us to let us know who is carrier is and if they did cover it or not. WEll if they did some of us might want to think of switching to them

Let's see....I'm going ice fishing next week and I know that everyday between now and then is going to be below freezing, but I want to check the ice now? And oh by the way, I will check it alone and with the vehicle first as opposed to walking out there and drilling some holes.

Mass. man's SUV goes through the ice, will have to be fished off bottom of lake

Gilford - A man from Andover, Mass. lost his vehicle through the ice of Lake Winnipesaukee yesterday afternoon.

The fire department received a 911 call at 1:15 p.m. from Michael Pandelina, reporting that his 2007 Ford Explorer (Eddie Bauer Edition) sport utility vehicle had broken through the ice.

Pandelina said he fishes on Saunders Bay, near Silver Sands Marina, every winter. He was planning to put out his ice fishing shack next weekend, and said he was driving out to check the condition of the ice. He got about 300 yards from shore when he heard ther chilling sound of ice cracking beneath him. "When it started cracking, I stopped." As soon as he stopped, he said, the front end of the vehicle went through the ice. Pandelina couldn't open the doors, so he exited the vehicle through the driver's side window.

Pandelina was able to escape the ordeal without getting wet, but suffered the pain of watching helplessly as his brand-new vehicle sank.

According to cars.com a 2007 Explorer weighs more than 4,000 pounds.

According to state law RSA 485-A, "Water Pollution and Waste Disposal," the owner of any petroleum-powered vehicle or petroleum container that becomes submerged in state waters "shall be removed from the water within 48 hours or as soon thereafter as safety and weather conditions permit." The law continues to say that the cost of removal will be borne by the vehicle owner, and that state authorities "may" issue citations for a violation of the law and issue fines of $500 per day for each day the vehicle remains in the water.

Due to the observed holiday yesterday, no state officials could be reached to answer whether or not Pandelina would be permitted to wait until spring to haul out the Ford, or if he would have to pay for someone to recover the vehicle immediately.

Gilford Fire Chief James Hayes, who responded to the scene, said yesterday's incident was the first case this winter of a vehicle breaking through the ice of any waters in Gilford, although it's not an uncommon occurence.

Hayes said the event should serve as a caution to other people who think of driving out onto a frozen water body. "Just because it's cold doesn't mean it's safe to put a vehicle on it."

The recent pattern of weather, which saw unseasonably warm days with rain, likely reduced the ice on the lake. The warm weather was followed by a couple of snowfalls, and the snowcover can insulate the ice surface and slow its formation, the chief said.

"Safety on Ice," a brochure available on the state Fish and Game Department's website, states that four to six inches of bluish or black ice can support a small group of dispersed people, and eight to ten inches can support an off-highway recreational vehicle. The brochure states, "Don't drive large vehicles out onto the ice."

Liability, collision or comprehensive....probably this would come under collision and have a deductable.....like if you rolled your car on a fresh icy & snow covered road because you took a curve too fast, lost rear wheel traction and flipped the car. When a big moose runs out of the woods and directly through your windshield, that's covered by comprehensive, also with a deductable.

If you drive out onto a frozen lake, and break through the ice 300 yards from shore, that's got to be collision because the ice was defective ice...right...so the owner of the ice, the State of NH, is responsible for your deductable!....that's it!

Collision Coverage is colliding with another vehicle or object. Comprehensive coverage, AKA "other than collision", is physical damage coverage for losses other than collision, subject to policy exclusions, limitations, and deductibles. Since this was not a collision with another vehicle or object, it would fall under Comprehensive coverage. The insurance company will have to point to an exclusion in the policy to deny coverage for the physical damage.

This topic comes up every year. I thought the short of it was an SUV or truck MAY be covered cause it's "expected" it may go off road. Where as a car has no reason to ever be off road. Or something to that effect.

So, was it safe?

This is condsidered a covered loss under the comprehensive portion of the standard MA auto policy-comprehensive is every/anything other than collision.

The claimant in this situation will collect the ACV of the car plus 5% sales tax less the deductible and the cost to remove the car/truck is also covered. There is no exclusionary language about car/truck/suv all the coverage is the same for the different vehicle types.

John Birdsall's comment reminded me of a dive I got called to 2 years ago about 9pm one Sunday night. Seems a guy in South Hampton managed to drive a brand new Durango down a dry straight street, turn right 40 degrees to the right off the road, drive between two oak trees, drive another 50 feet or so across some guy's lawn to the Pow Wow River, where he deftly avoided a huge boulder on the embankment and drove into the river. 200 feet downstream I dove and chained it up through the front rim and they towed it back in-upright the whole time on the river bed. Windows tight, doors shut. I didn't need to break any glass nor enter the car. On the embankment the P.D. opened the door to find only one key in the ignition. When they asked the driver why there were no other keys on the ring, no floormats, books, papers, sunglasses, owners' manuals, drink containers, CD player, DVD player, radio or other such items, he stated..."The diver must have taken them". The South Hampton Police Officer who was in my boat the entire time that night found that....amusing.

Floating this SUV and getting it to shore will be a fat fee for sure.

'Probably trying to avoid an expensive repair to his car: That is insurance fraud.

Could be a combination of factors -- going through the ice, landing on rocks on the bottom, being lifted from those rocks, being hauled out of the ice...regardless, it certainly took a beating!

GILFORD - It took Gulbicki and Bertocchi towing companies two days to extricate a 2007 Ford Explorer from Saunders Bay, but they did so late yesterday afternoon. The SUV broke through the ice Monday afternoon, at about 1:15 p.m. It's owner, Michael Pandelina, of Andover, Mass., had driven the 4,700-lb vehicle onto the ice, he said Monday, to check the ice condition in preparation of a fishing trip he planned for the coming weekend.

He said he heard the ice cracking and stopped, and then the front end of the vehicle began to sink. Pandelina narrowly escaped through the driver's side window before his vehicle completely submerged, sinking some 35 feet before reaching the lake bottom.

Charles Gulbicki, of Gulbicki Towing, said the ice was about two-inches thick where Pandelina's vehicle went through, and so it was unsafe for the recovery crew to attempt to pull it up there. After a diver attached a cable to the Explorer, workers for the wrecker company used chain saws to cut a path in the ice to shore, where a tow truck with a winch dragged the vehicle about 250 feet.

Once closer to shore, beams were positioned under the Explorer, and it was dragged up the planks and onto the ice, then up onto the truck's bed. By the end of he journey, every body panel of the vehicle was crumpled and most windows were smashed.

Gulbicki said it was a two-day-long effort to remove the vehicle, and he was quite relieved when the truck was finally secured on his tow truck.

If Pandelina had not arrainged to have his vehicle removed from the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee, he could be facing a fine of $500 per day that he left it there under the state's water protection laws.

Outstanding photos -- and the article explains the extensive damage. Towing it from the sinking point (thin ice) to the raising point (thicker ice) no doubt required dragging the vehicle over a BUNCH of rocks (anyone who has dove Winnipesaukee can attest to the, uh, presence of said rocks...). I suppose we can all agree on the upside -- no one was injured or killed, and the vehicle was retrieved relatively quickly.

Be careful out there, folks.

Your looking at the ice near shore.The towing company said the ice was only 2 inches where the truck went through.That's just enough to support people.

Seems a guy in South Hampton managed to drive a brand new Durango down a dry straight street, turn right 40 degrees to the right off the road, drive between two oak trees, drive another 50 feet or so across some guy's lawn to the Pow Wow River, where he deftly avoided a huge boulder on the embankment and drove into the river. 200 feet downstream I dove and chained it up through the front rim and they towed it back in-upright the whole time on the river bed. Windows tight, doors shut. I didn't need to break any glass nor enter the car. On the embankment the P.D. opened the door to find only one key in the ignition. When they asked the driver why there were no other keys on the ring, no floormats, books, papers, sunglasses, owners' manuals, drink containers, CD player, DVD player, radio or other such items, he stated..."The diver must have taken them". The South Hampton Police Officer who was in my boat the entire time that night found that....amusing. Floating this SUV and getting it to shore will be a fat fee for sure.

The SUV broke through the ice Monday afternoon, at about 1:15 p.m. It's owner, Michael Pandelina, of Andover, Mass., had driven the 4,700-lb vehicle onto the ice, he said Monday, to check the ice condition in preparation of a fishing trip he planned for the coming weekend. He said he heard the ice cracking and stopped, and then the front end of the vehicle began to sink. Pandelina narrowly escaped through the driver's side window before his vehicle completely submerged, sinking some 35 feet before reaching the lake bottom. Charles Gulbicki, of Gulbicki Towing, said the ice was about two-inches thick where Pandelina's vehicle went through, and so it was unsafe for the recovery crew to attempt to pull it up there. After a diver attached a cable to the Explorer, workers for the wrecker company used chain saws to cut a path in the ice to shore, where a tow truck with a winch dragged the vehicle about 250 feet. Once closer to shore, beams were positioned under the Explorer, and it was dragged up the planks and onto the ice, then up onto the truck's bed. By the end of he journey, every body panel of the vehicle was crumpled and most windows were smashed. Gulbicki said it was a two-day-long effort to remove the vehicle, and he was quite relieved when the truck was finally secured on his tow truck. If Pandelina had not arrainged to have his vehicle removed from the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee, he could be facing a fine of $500 per day that he left it there under the state's water protection laws. Towing it from the sinking point (thin ice) to the raising point (thicker ice) no doubt required dragging the vehicle over a BUNCH of rocks (anyone who has dove Winnipesaukee can attest to the, uh, presence of said rocks...). I suppose we can all agree on the upside -- no one was injured or killed, and the vehicle was retrieved relatively quickly. Be careful out there, folks.
