The 454 Magnum puts out 350 HP. But with a lot of weight!
The 2.0 TDI Audi 4 cylinder at stage 1 is also 350HP. With much less weight! I'm assuming the HP to weight ratio put the smaller engine ahead! Size does not matter but the amount of useful HP does!

I'd like to see the HP/Torque curves on both those engines. You're right useful HP matters, but where it is available also matters.
