Treatment for cedar shingles
 

All shingles on my house need to treated, hasn't been done since '04. Does anyone have experience or made a comparison between the new Flood CWF UV5 and Sikkens Log and Siding. We're going with a clear or natural light, depending on brand. Prime concern is how long before we have to maintain.
We looked at a house on the water near Kona today that was done 5 years ago and looks like new but it is a darker color which supposedly lasts much longer.
Anyone have experience with these brands?

I used a product called X100 8 yrs ago and water still beads off. Its not cheep but worth the $.

Couple of things still need to be known. What is the original sealer product? Are the shingles Red Cedar, White Cedar, etc?

Basically you want to purchase the best finish you can afford. You also want a product that provides more in the way of UV protection than water protection, this is siding on a vertical surface, water will not hold on that surface, but the sun will, granted some water protection is required otherwise we would not paint houses.

The reason that the house you see looks like it was done yesterday is that is was probably finished on all surfaces of each board (very important) and also has some form of air movement behind the siding, achieved either with wood slats or a Cedar Breather product. Allowing air to move behind siding is the key to drying out faster after a rain and therefore not absorbing water that will push the finish off the surface of the wood.
