A haunting loon call at night is what I consider to be the most predominant sound I correlate to the lake house. All the other sounds are more less available where I live away from the lake.

Loons would be my first thought, but in the last four years, it's been the back-up beeps of construction vehicles from my new neighbors mega-mansion build.

I've got two freshwater lake houses. While the one in Florida does have Loons in winter, they make no sounds.
Although the lake is more than a mile across, nearly 100% developed, there's very little in the way of boats and their attendant noises. (And no cigar smoke--probably the most insulting affront to the senses upon the lake). There's an unmistakable noise of the State's airboat as he cruises monthly distributing tablets of some kind into the lake. Last weekend, there was the dreaded 2-stroke Jet-Ski. ![]() The occasional weekend GFBL (ocean-racer) boat makes a lap around my Florida lake, but because the lake is round, one lap is as much as they'll do. ![]() Winter on Winnipesaukee can drive you crazy with no sounds whatsoever. (Except to make your ears ring trying to seek a sound). ![]() In Spring, it's always the calls of the American Robin that dominate the forest's birdsong environment. Bald Eagles, Cormorants, and Turkey Vultures are mostly silent. Ospreys will make loud chirping. Then on Thursdays, there are duelling leaf blowers. ![]() During bike week: motorcycles. If you're on the dock, you can hear motorcycle groups--where and when they stop and start up again In Summer, it's the crashing of waves on the shoreline, and the soaking of dock. ![]() All that said, I voted for Loons--as I've learned what they're saying--and they're the only truly captivating sounds in my environment. ![]() |

The poll allows up to ten choices for sounds, but there really are a handful more. One night on the beach in pitch black darkness, I made a short video of the crackling sounds of the campfire and the loons in the background. I just thought that was the coolest prehistoric experience. |

Some seasons, frog calls can be overwhelming during daylight hours, when Loons are generally quiet. (Except when Ultralight aircraft and Bald Eagles appear over the treeline). Cicadas are in that same grouping as crickets and frogs, too. ![]() |

"camp" sounds, no lake houses on my island:
Chain saws Nostalgia--I miss the rumble of the old Mount Washington Enterprise (?) engines. Kids in 12' boats with 2 cycle engines going endlessly back and forth because they weren't allowed to go out of sight of their camp. |

Yup. Lawyers see to have done more to change this world than any other profession.

The signal and flashing light help with work site safety, and lower our workers' compensation insurance.

Worker's Comp costs increase with claims.
The beeping and flashing warns nearby employees that the machine is backing, and that the operator may be unaware of their location relative to the machine. Unfortunately insurance being what insurance is... the industry rate is partially set by the whole. So some acting without regard to safety increases the costs to all. The insurance industry that supplies worker's comp coverage has laid out its value. Are you stating the insurance companies are being deceptive? Or is it the State of NH that through its Legislature and Governors office have imposed and sustained laws requiring worker's comp insurance are being deceptive? |

Worker's Comp should not increase with OSHA-compliance according to the insurers and the State of NH.
You may be experiencing fines for repeated failure to comply... and I can imagine that an insurer having the knowledge would take it into consideration. |

I would choose “silence” first. But thats not included in poll? So I’ll go with Loons…
