I have a feeling that the lake temp. will continue to go down from this point on. I hope I am wrong, but I don't think it will recover to the Aug. peak of 78 degrees. July saw a peak of 79 degrees. I think we are on the cusp of the slippery slope that is the pre-cursor to... (hard swallow) fall. Shrinking daylight hours and lower overnight temps make this almost inevitable

Isn't it too early in the year for this type of post??
![]() You may be right about the lake temp., but I predict a healthy indian summer if its this "brisk" This early in August.

You are right. We've seen the peak of water temperature for 2006. Every morning this week, there has been fog rising from the water just as the sun rises. This is heat leaving the lake. With nights in the 50's and 60's, and daytime temps struggling to hit 80, summer is on the wane. Now that the sun is setting before 8PM, "unofficial" summer is already gone. Now, its "summer emergency" season. But, we're still about 18 weeks from safe ice anywhere on the lake.

Wifey loves that 80 degree water (reminds her of the Fla Keys)....I prefer it a little more refreshing (70's)
Why even swim when the water is warmer than the air?....you have to get out of the water to cool off ![]() |

It is officially still summer! We shouldn't even speak the words fall or ice until at least the middle of next month.
I have to constantly remind my mother who spends her summers at the lake, she said last weekend "it is almost over" drives me crazy it was 100 degrees 6days ago. Please don't rush it....... The only Ice I would like to talk about is in my drink ;-) |

I remember taking the last, long swim at our friends' place on Camp Island last year (2005) on Sunday, October 16 -- if I remember correctly, the water temp was in the mid
60s and the air temp was well into the 70s, maybe low 80s. It was true Indian Summer. You just never know... |

Just looked back at the date on some pictures we took last year while spending the day wakeboarding. It was Oct 5th. I remember it was a beautiful day at the lake, although we had to wait until after 11:00 AM for the fog to lift.

Lower water temp is actually a *good* thing. This past week, I noticed much less algae than normal for August (well, normal for August over the past 10-15 years...). Overall visibility in the Lake seems much worse than normal this summer, probably attributable to high water throughout fall, spring, summer. But the algae has certainly been lower. Let's hope this continues through August.

I like the idea of making the last day of summer a family holiday. My oldest starts first grade in a few weeks and it would be a fun way to cap off a great season. Thanks for sharing!!

Now- I'm not really a southerner. I've spent lot's of time at the " Beautiful Spirit Lake" ( Winni) in the past and am " stuck" here in Florida for a litttle while longer--
Today- ( Friday, Aug 11) it is the following hot--87 degrees when we got up this morning 96 degrees right now 101 in the sun humidity 93 per cent water temperature 89 degrees and going down to a " cool" 81 degrees tonight!!! i can't wait for forum-fest!!!!---and don't worry -- you lucky ones at the lake-- this is your "glory time"-- i'm happy for- and envy all of you right now. god bless!! |

Water temp was at 75 degrees today. Thats 3 less than when I posted this thread. Temps over the next 5 days only support my theory that it's all down-hill from here. Don't get me wrong, I love the time spent at the lake from now to Columbus Day, but I truly believe that we are in the "cool-down" phase of the season.

OK Rinkerfam and HomeWood, but I'm sending you guys my oil bill for this winter! Nothing says economical heating like a 115 year old camp that was winterized 60-70 years ago. burrrr.........
Its funny how 65 deg feels cold right now, but its nice not having the humidity hanging around. I think I'll go jump in the lake seeings its about 20 deg warmer then the air is right now.

Weirs guy
I agree about the lack of humidity being a plus. Looks to be a great weekend. I think I'll be spending more time in the water than on it too ![]()

Frost advisory? Wow. It was 60 this morning, so I turned the heat on a little and rolled the window down. I don't want to get our hopes up or jinx us, but could this be a sign of a good winter? good = snow and thick ice

As of Thursday, the lake temp. is roughly equal to that of the first week in Sept. '05. I have a hard enough time dealing with the change from Summer to Autumn as it is. I can only hope that mother nature slows down just a little

I noticed that on Monday 8/7 the water temperature reading on the GTX was 79 but by the end of the week it was down to 75. Not sure how accurate it is but it did show a drop. The 3 days of wind and cool weather sure helped cool things down.
Did someone say the Babes are starting their SNOW DANCE? ![]() |
