OK...it was about the right size—and colors and graphics—but with no photograph handy, had to "hedge" regarding the boat that I saw.

That "zing" sound suggests at least two possibilities: the "ring gear" is worn out in the usual spots—or maybe a $10 "Bendix" has shattered.
The expense of labor (today) to replace a $10 spring makes the replacement of a complete starter a sensible decision.
