If you want total peace and quiet, it's worth the 2 hour drive to Popham Beach State Park (Maine) huge beach with two islands that you can walk out to at low tide. There are little tidal rivers, rocky outcroppings and lots of wild life. The beach is so vast that you can find your own spot and be alone if you wish.
It is very shallow there in spots and the tide withdraws almost 1/4 of a mile. The sun warms the sand causing the incoming tide to warm the water a lot more than you would expect. Take a look at it on Google Earth Absolutely no honky tonk ........just sand, surf and one restaurant (Spinney's) |
