My Wall of Shame is actually the bottom of Johnson's Cove in Winter Harbor. Following the 1938 hurricane there was a sawmill in Johnson's Cove, and when the lumbering was finished, and the sawmill abandoned, the leftover logs slowly (over years) sank to the bottom. The Cove wasn't very deep, so many, many of these logs had their butt ends on the bottom, but their small ends were barely under water. In the early 1950s I had an 8' pram with a 5hp Elgin outboard motor and I used to explore the Cove regularly looking for frogs and turtles. Without exception, every trip to the Cove ended up with more than one busted shear pin. I became an expert at putting in the new one in record time. As a Christmas present one of those years, I received a package of 25 shear pins! The next summer I also was much more careful when I ventured into Johnson's Cove. By now I think the logs don't present a problem.

And I thought my brother was the shear pin champion. It is very shallow by my parent's and he was always shearing a pin. That's a cute story. Those logs might still be just as preserved today as they were in the 50s. The fiber in the wood is enhanced by the water.

About 1970 I bought my first boat, an 18 foot Searay, and was all excited to take it out on Winnipesaukee.

After we launched it I nervously headed out of Alton Bay. My girlfriend said "We don't really know what we are doing, we should go closer to shore". So I did, and hit a rock.

After all these years of boating, I can't say that was the last time I hit something, but over many years the damage incidents have become less frequent.

Regarding the outdrive...

How did that fall off?

Did someone forget to install the bolts?

Indeed, it is!

My "Hall of Shame" consisted of (mostly) Danforth anchors, but I've sold them all off.

That counter-rotating Volvo outdrive could fetch over $3000.

I've found many outdrives over the years that contain just the final driveshaft, housing and prop. But this is the first entire lower unit. The lack of damage indeed is surprising; the middle driveshaft isn't bent (and still works! Wish I could hook a motor up to it). But looking at this pic, you can see it was held in place by only four bolts, the rear two of which conveniently sheared away and fell out leaving two nice, secure mounting holes.
Pretty sure this happened this year; almost no corrision at all.

Thanks, Dan! When designing the house, we specifically put The Wall in behind the Great room's fireplace to hold the best pieces. It quickly overflowed to the porch... not sure where to next. It's an inexhaustible, renewable resource.
