I am pretty sure you're right about the story originally taking place in Maine. It was Kate Hepburn who convinced the producers to shoot in NH as opposed to Maine because of the folliage advantage. She was quoted as saying something like "You can't shoot it in Maine....the leaves don't turn orange in Maine. You have to shoot it in New Hampshah".
