Hells Angels food drive

I was passing through Meredith today and noticed the Hells Angels supporting a food drive and they had a trailer to hual it with.

My wife was mortified

I bet they don't have to worry about people stealing from them......

Many motorcycle clubs across the US sponsor such events this time of year. Toys For Tots, local food pantries and St Jude's Hospital are ones that come immediately to mind.

Not sure why your wife was "mortified", not all motorcycle club members eat their young, that only happens in B grade movies!

Toys for Tots is run by the United States Marine Corps, not a motorcycle club.

That said, there are many good things that people who ride motorcycles do for people in need. The HAMC's efforts for the local food pantries is a good example of this.

Regarding the motorcycle clubs, if the Harley rides didn't have a large number of bikes with loud pipes on their rides it may get more fanfare.

I served in the Marine Reserves and did realize this. I should of said many motorcycle clubs support toys for tots and actively participate not sponsor it.

I guess this is why they do food drives then. Have a motorcycle GANG organize a food drive and it wipes out the criminal component of the organization

A boost during a time of need
Laconia:

The Salvation Army's 2009 "red kettle" fundraising campaign in Laconia got a big shot in the arm this week from an exasperated donor.

While volunteers from Laconia Savings Bank were manning a kettle downtown at the intersection of Pleasant and Main streets, a motorist pulled up and gave the volunteers a few choice words and then, according to Capt. Scott Flanders, a check for $1,000.

"The guy started complaining that every time he comes through, they're at the stop sign and he said, 'I'm going to do something for you so I won't have to stop for another kettle. I'm going to take care of you guys for the rest of the season," and then handed the volunteer a check for $1,000, recounted a bemused and grateful Flanders on Friday.

"The lady was afraid to stick the check in the kettle," Flanders continued, and held onto it until she could personally give it to Flanders.

While he knows the identity of the donor, Flanders declined to name him for privacy reasons.
The donation highlighted an otherwise slow week for the Salvation Army's major annual fundraiser.

"The kettles are very slow," said Flanders. As of Friday, there were only six kettle days left — the effort ends Dec. 24 — with just a bit more than $50,000 of the $75,000 goal having been met.

"This is a big weekend and it's going to make or break us," said Flanders.

He was able to report positive news on two other fronts: the Angel Tree toy-and-clothing drive and a food drive being mounted for the Salvation Army's and several other local food pantries by the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club.

As to the former, "we've really done a turnaround. Everything is coming together today," said Flanders. Only four days earlier, Becky Guyer was bemoaning the fact that the amount of donated toys and children's clothing was the lowest she had seen in her 20 years as the Angel Tree coordinator.

The Angel Tree program started doling out Christmas gifts Friday and will do so again on Monday. More than 200 children are expected to receive gifts from the Salvation Army this year, said Flanders.

On Monday, the Salvation Army also expects to receive its share of the food brought in by the Hells Angels.

"It's going slowly but surely," said Ed Shaughnessy, president of the Angels' New Hampshire Nomads chapter. "We're getting there."

"We'll probably exceed our goal" of 12,000 food items, said Shaughnessy, adding that, as of Friday, there were an estimated 10,000 items in the collection trailer on the Weirs Beach Lobster Pound property.

This evening, beginning at 6, the Hells Angels will be holding a party at the Lobster Pound to benefit its food drive. There is discounted admission for those bringing non-perishable food items.

Shaughnessy promised a good time with music and "plenty of food."

"The buffet line is probably, without exaggeration, 20 feet long," he said. "Nobody will leave hungry."

Also on Friday, the Salvation Army got a final tally on its fifth annual Turkey Plunge which took place Nov. 21 at Endicott Rock Park beach.

Plunge Co-Chairman Don Morrissey reported that the plunge — where more than 100 hardy souls took a dip in the Big Lake — raised more than $15,000. He and the Plunge Committee thanked Richard Ray and his family, who own and operate the Lobster Pound, for the post-plunge luncheon.

Also receiving the committee's thanks for their help in making the plunge successful were: Coca-Cola of the Lakes Region; Lago; Hart's Turkey Farm Restaurant; Kitchen Cravings; Fratello's; O Steak & Seafood; T-Bones & Cactus Jack's; Patrick's Pub & Eatery; the Culinary Arts Department of Lakes Region Community College; Aavid Thermalloy; Central Paper Products; Joyce Janitorial; Malone, Dirubbo and Associates; The Irwin Zone; Gilford Wal-Mart; Melcher & Prescott Insurance and the Meredith Police Association; Meredith Village Savings Bank; Taylor Rental; the Laconia police and fire departments; New Hampshire Marine Patrol; Oxton Landscaping; Moulton's Farm; Belknap County Youth Services; Simplicity the Clown; the Belknap County Sheriff's Department; JoJo's Country Store, the Holderness Country Store; Gilford Square Market and Deli; and Pat Kelly of WLNH/WEMJ Nassau Broadcasting who served as the plunge's master of ceremonies.

We can't change " the Gang " so to speak....

but who are we not to appreciate the work done to help feed our needing neighbors.

I wonder how many out there have done a good deed yet this season !!!!

The HAMC raise collected over 10,000 "POUNDS" of food to give to the hungry. If you have a problem with the club as a whole, that's fine, but don't try to disparage what they have done with this food drive. They should be praised for their efforts, not judged for their alleged past indiscresions.

Whether you give a gift or the gift of time - remembering and helping those less fortunate is a thing you can do all year - not just at the holidays.

So if at this particular time of year things are tight for you . . . that's ok. Maybe by the 4th of July you can help someone in need and make a donation to a food pantry, volunteer at a shelter for humans or animals, walk to support cancer research, boat in support of Easter Seals. . . you get my point.

This is a time of year that gets a lot of "focus". The need however is all year long.

I would stress the volunteer part of your message. I believe everyone has at least a little time they can spend to help others.

And to stay on thread... I'll get a box of stuff to the Hells Angels!

The HA motorcycle club has members that live in Meridith, Laconia, 2 in the Weirs Beach area alone, Moultonborough, Tuftonboro, and Alton. Most are computer savy, and read message boards. Did I mention how much I love the Hells Angels.......
