Hi all, coming up to God's country for a few days in Feb. Staying at the Church Landing.
Was thinking of bringing the ATVs to use on the ice. My son has never done that before. Just wondering a few things: Do I need permit or registration for the ATVs to use them here? Can we just drive on at the town dock boat ramp? Is this really safe? Anything else that you could tell me would be great. Thanks in advance. |

Must be registered. Yes the ice is safe, in the bay, however use extreme caution. There are open water areas around docks, inlets etc... and thin ice around it. I would suggest tire chains, I had both my atv's out Derby weekend with no issues.

Thanks guys. Does NH have helmet laws for ATVs?
Can I register them online or do I need to go to a DMV office for that? I dont have any chains for them now. Maybe we will have gotten some snow by Feb 15. |

Registry on-line?? I have not seen it before. I always register mine at H&K Motorsports on Union St. in Laconia. If you need chains they did carry them there at a modest price. I think I paid $57 a set. About the helmet. Yes they have a helmet law. ![]()

You can register your ATVs at AJs Bait and Tackle Shop in Meredith. If we get snow on the lake you will not need tire chains but then again it wont hurt to have them for safety.
You can access the lake right at the boat ramp at the town docks. Have fun. |

Under 18 you have to have a helmet and eye protection. I don't think there's any exclusion for riding on frozen bodies of water.

Here's a link to NH's ATV / snomo laws pamphlet:
http://www.wildlife.state.nh.us/OHRV...aws_Digest.pdf Please note the valid dates listed. If you're planning to ride in NH after the ice melts be aware that you'll have to re-register in June and NH has a mud-season closure of trails. There may be a couple more retrictions depending upon your son's age and size of ATV. |

How think is the ice now? I havent been up there in two weekends because of stuff I needed to get done. Last time i was there, there was 15 inches. Any reports since? this cold weather and no snow is great for ice making.

There was 10-12 inches off the North side of Mink last weekend. With the cold and lack of snow cover, we're making, not losing ice right now. But you need to ask about the specific area you plan to cross. Some parts near the broads locked in two or more weeks later than much of the lake so have much less ice today.
