Where is the water most pristine at Newfound Lake?

Ok, this is a Winnipesaukee Forum but I've not found a better place to post this question.

My family decided to spend the first week of summer at Newfound Lake because so many people have praised its pristine water. We ended up staying at a waterfront cottage near Whittemore Point. The water accessible from the shore was clean but didn't really look like "one of the cleanest" in the US. I could definitely see some algae growth underneath. (I'm not much of a lakes person, but the clarity didn't compare favorably against Lake Tahoe, in my opinion.)

So I'm wondering if the water is clearer at some other parts of Newfound Lake. My family loved the lake and its surrounding vibe so much that we want to vacation there again, but preferably where the water is clearer.

This site is for the Lakes Region. Newfound is in the Lakes Region so you are absolutely in the right place. I will be anxious to see if others think that algae counts on the pristine scale for a New England lake.

I've heard it several times too, from locals.

I guess it has been for years.

And I also heard that Merry Meeting is either number 2 or 3 on the list for cleanest lakes in the country.

Early summer is pretty early for algae bloom. Are you sure it wasn't pine pollen? Pine pollen seemed to be heavier than usual this year and it is normally significant.

Good call Dick. The pine pollen when it congeals can easily be mistaken for an algae bloom. Down here on Quabbin Reservoir the pollen when it congregates can look like islands or shallow spots from a distance.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I saw greenish, mushy stuff in the water and assumed it was algae. I'm not much of a nature person, let alone a lake person.

Does pine pollen let up in mid to late summer?
