Swimmers in the Alton Bay / Merrymeeting River Channel
Did anyone else see the three-four children swimming with their 'pool noodles' just past the bridge leading from Parker's/ Gillan's slips under the bridge this afternoon? When we entered the Bay about 2 p.m. they were just floating in the channel just past the old Downing's gas dock. Another boater started yelling at them and I heard a voice from the town beach yelling at the boater! Guess you can't legislate stupid. (and I mean the parents here, as these kids did not even appear to be teenagers!)

That is just plain stupid parenting!!! I remember last year coming across a few kids swiming just outside the bridge near Weirs beach as you go into Pagus Bay. That is one busy place and certainly no place for a kid to be swiming. It's tricky enough to manuver your boat thru there without worrying about hitting a kid.

Isn't there a law/prohibition in A-Bay concerning swimming the channel? Why weren't the authorities informed, not to arrest, but to educate the uninformed, ignorant parents?

It does sound like it would have been a lot of fun. They must have really been able to feel the booms!
