I am sorry for the odd nature of this thread, but I was curious if anyone had any suggestions for a good barbershop in Wolfeboro. I am heading up this weekend from my apartment in DC and was hoping to find a nice little barbershop. I am preferably looking for a barber and not a stylist. If I could get one of those guys that still uses the warm cream and straight razor on the back of the neck, that would be even better. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Man, you've hit a sore spot.
Years ago, down on the railroad street where there are now high-end shops...across from the post office parking lot, there was a true old-school barber shop. Carly's. In the shop, two true old-school locals, Carly and Warren, cut hair and dispensed wisdom and opinions on everything you could imagine. Going there was a treat -- and one that my grandfather made sure I experience at least once each summer. Extra short. When they retired and the shop closed, an era ended. I'm sorry this is absolutely no help to you now...but it's something I've lamented for a long time. There was a time when it didn't matter if I headed north in need of a wig reduction -- there was always Carly's. My dad goes to another place now in town, where a woman cuts his hair. I balk and remember the days when the buzz cut came with a generous serving of Yankee wisdom and attitude. But if you want to know a good place to get your dog groomed on the eastern side of the Lake, I can certainly help with that!

Sitting in the chairs waiting for a hair cut was to say in the least interesting!
I had asked that they not cut the sides to short and the reply came "you don't want whitewalls? They'er spotty! " ("sporty" I tried to write with an accent). I seem to remembers Carly's several locations over the years. |

Well, lucky for me, the weather was beautiful today and it didn't upset me that I couldn't get my hair cut. But it sounds like it's a real shame Wolfeboro lost Carly's. Doesn't Wolfeboro just seem like the right place for a shop like that? It's a shame.

There is still a "guys" barbershop on Main St. in Alton. Jerry is the barber and it has the same local atmosphere that Carly's had. My Dad now goes there.
Note to GTXRider - you ought to go with him next time you're at the lake. You and your brother looked better before the ladies started cutting your hair. Check out those "SPAHTY Whitewalls!" |
