Around 11am on Monday morning we found a bear cub on our deck. He/she was checking out my tomatoes that I am growing in containers. When I got ready to take the picture the cub stood right up . In my picture I think the cub looks like one of those carved wooden bear statues. The mom bear and two siblings were waiting below the deck.

I PM Airedale1 last year asking for suggestions on what camera I should purchase. He asked me questions such as what type of pictures I take etc. So....I must thank Airedale for all his help in my camera selection.

What can you do on your own property when a bear repeatedly kills your chickens and is returning in the daylight when you have children! This is getting scary!

Call fish and game right away, they'll help. The best thing you can do for a bear in your yard is scare it away. I was told this this summer by a USDA fish and game guy. Bears need to associate people with not nice things and not want to hang around while you're around. Watching a bear while it is near you is not a good thing because the bear begins to think that it's ok to be around people. Call fish and game, they'll either help or give you a USDA bear guy who will help. |

I always loved that line in "Witness" when the father of the girl who has shared an arm's length love with Harrison Ford tells Ford as he is leaving, "You be careful out there among them English."
In this post I would say, "You be careful out there among them black bear mom and cubs!" These are not pets and can turn on a dime and attack even if they just misinterpret a slight move on your part!! Cute picture but not worth the risk! |

Flash bangs work great for scaring bears away, you can get them at the local fireworks store. Also paintball guns work well as do rubber bullets. The bears learn that they aren't welcome when they constantly are getting hit in the rear with paintballs or rubber bullets.

Argie I think you have it.. We need someone to Photoshop in those little JackO'lantern Candy Pails the Kids have, and caption it.. "Richard!, There's someone at the door!"
