After bringing drinking water up to our camp for the past several years, we are finally in a position to have a well drilled. Can anyone recommend a good well contractor in the Meredith area?
This will be our first experience with well water, so any advice is appreciated. Thank you! |

We used Thomas Well, in Moultonborough. They did a nice job. It had an added complication, as the well is used as a water supply for a ground source heat pump (aka "geothermal"). Well water typically is hard. You may want to add a water softener to your plumbing. Some do, some don't.

Please do yourself a big service by contacting this company and talking to Dan and/or Jeff. They have done several wells in my area of Alton Bay and people do not have anything but great compliments about their work ethics and quality of work. If you go into search for wells I believe, you will see many many happy people who have used them.

We have observed that there is quite a bit of variation in the quality of drilled well water in this area. We have excellent spring like water here and in fact there are commercial wells about one mile away that sell water to bottling companies. On the other side of the quality spectrum, we have looked at several houses in the lakes region than had to have elaborate water conditioning systems. You may already have talked to neighbors with drilled wells and found that water quality is good there. If you have not had those discussions yet, might be a good idea prior to spending the big bucks.
Just my two cents. |

Their consultant (Bud Rollins) is a real straight shooter who will research the other wells nearby, give you an accurate estimate of how deep and whether a hydrofracture will be needed. They also will quote you on pumps, wire, pipe, pressure tanks that are top quality and equal or greater than is needed for the required depth. Too many other drillers will skimp on this stuff as it adds to the cost of the well and they are trying to keep the quotes as low as possible. Tasker's will be more expensive, but I know I have the best well in my area (compared against State Well reports) for volume, as they did an excellent job with the hydrofracture proccedure. They are one of the few drillers who hydrofracture themselves, not sub-ing it to a contractor. Thus, they really do it well as they want you to be happy with the well......

There is one well drilling company in Moultonborough that will drill a well for a fixed price.
I have had a well drilled by the foot and I have had a well drilled with a fixed price. Two different well drilling companies. By the foot you have no idea what the cost will be. Fixed price you know up front what the cost will be. Anyone can go to state office building in Concord and research how deep wells are on your street/neighborhood. You can also do this online. Note that just because your neighbor's well did not go down too far or went down a great depth has little bearing on how deep your well will end up. It's a crap shoot. |

As stated by another member, I would contact Thomas well in Moultonborough. They are great to deal with and are always fairly priced.

Whoever you hire for drilling, be sure to have a reputable, independent lab test for arsenic and radon. Your well driller is only required to do a basic test that doesn't include arsenic or radon, even though a surprisingly high percentage of drilled artesian wells in our area have elevated levels of one or both of those substances. Even if you're willing to gamble with your own health, if you ever wanted to sell your property, a saavy prospective buyer will certainly test for it. Better to find out sooner rather than later.

Thank you!
I found the website and it is full of great information. http://des.nh.gov/onestop/index.htm It appears that wells in my immediate neighborhood vary in depth from 200' - 425'+ and also vary from 8 - 50 gallons per minute. You're right, it's a crap shoot. I'm going to make some calls now. |

Your well driller can provide you with sample bottles for testing. The state site has info on sample drawing procedures and rates for various levels of testing of the samples. If you drive the samples to Concord you can save some money on testing, at the expense of the driving. That worked well for me, as I had to go down that way for something else then anyway.
