We're launching the news here first! We feel that the Winni Forum is a vital resource for our guests, and for us--we would love to hear your thoughts!
Occupying the historic John Coe homestead in Center Harbor, NH, is Lavinia’s Relaxed Dining, an exciting new casual restaurant and tavern, opening April 2012. Featuring expanded pub areas and a menu inspired by the valuable suggestions of our patrons, in conjunction with the talents of our new Executive Chef, Jeff Woolley, we are delighted to welcome you to the lake’s region’s new favorite eating house. Says owner, Luke Dupuis, “I am thrilled to launch this concept, and to be able to adopt and implement many of the excellent insights of our customers from over the years. The menu is fresh and exciting, the décor is friendly and inviting, and I can’t wait to share the talents of our new team when we open in the spring. We’ve taken the advice of our valued customers, and focused on offering a wider variety of choices to appeal to the everyday diner, year-round. Our core strategy includes integrity, honesty, and friendliness, to meet our most important goal: making our customers feel at home when they walk through our door.” For those with fond memories of the building’s signature rooms, like the famous “President’s Room”, have no fear: the delicate and timeless beauty of this particular room is untouched, and remains the perfect spot for your special dinner or occasion. You’ll love our expanded downstairs pub, where you can enjoy our full menu offerings, as well as the cozy upstairs lounge, and kick back in one of our comfy loveseats and unwind with a cocktail, lighter fare snacks, or the full dinner menu. And of course, children are welcome; our Kids Menu was designed to feature our younger diners' favorites! What’s in a name? Lavinia T. Senter, the pretty daughter of Samuel & Lettice Senter, owners of Senter House Hotel in Center Harbor, married John Coe in 1819, and they made their home in the Coe Mansion. A strong, loyal and community-minded woman, Lavinia, with her husband John, was a dedicated abolitionist. A section of the underground railroad tunnel is still visible in Lavinia’s basement…Lavinia’s Relaxed Dining is an homage to a Center Harbor matriarch, and a piece of history we can’t wait to bring to life. Opening April, 2012…603.253.8617….Visit www.laviniasdining.com to take a peek at the menu! Last edited by laviniasdining; 03-17-2012 at 08:21 AM. |

What a coincidence!
This summer I am opening a new restaurant, "Brian's Stressed Out and Rushed Dining", it follows the theme of a crowded New York deli at lunch time on a weekday. We don't have all the details worked out yet, but we're going for a theme where new comers feel totally confused and disoriented upon entering. Seating will be extremely limited, and we may employ some homeless people to camp at random tables just to add to the ambiance. The menu will mostly be $10 sandwiches, $6 cups of soup, stuff like that. Hope to see you there.

Is Lavinia's just a renaming of the Coe House and changing the menu to a more casual format? Or, is it a separate entity within the Coe House?
I do hope that the lobster roll can match what Rosie's was serving. |

Still searching for a location. Looked at a couple of places, but they were too much up to code. I'd rather find some place that doesn't have a working restroom or reliable heat/AC.

Sorry for the confusion, BlackCatIslander--good question: Lavinia's Relaxed Dining is indeed a new dining establishment, located in the building that housed the Coe House Restaurant...after five years of operating as the Coe House, and struggling with inconsistencies inherent to a seasonal operation, it was time to make a change. And change it has! Looking forward to seeing you there! p.s. we were always big fans of Rosie's lobster rolls, too! |

However, on Main Street, Meredith, I understand that Karen & Barry's closed this past week. Might look in to that for a sandwich deli site. Years ago, Steve was very well liked and decided to "retire". PS, we don't believe that Venti Pizza has lasted so long! If they go out, might be site to be considered, but I assume it to code as it's sit down restaurant and was so before as Abodante Restaurant. An edit: another option to look in Meredith: the vacant for at least three years, across from Karen & Barry's, the former Alexandria Lamp Shop a maroon one-story building. The grass in front could be very attractive with picnic tables, benches and the like, provided planning board approvals. I seem to remember that it might be in serious need of plumbing, although years ago it was doctor's exam rooms and offices where wash sinks were remved. Way before, it was gallery of drapery place and has very nice skylight not seen from the Main Street. Choose your open hours and you have possibility of hotel guests as clients, who have an easy walk! Last edited by no-engine; 03-17-2012 at 03:11 PM. |

As a convicted hijacker myself, I can't say too much against brk-Int's humorous creation of a out of sync deli in a REAL RESTAURANT's announcement, other than I wish he really could create 6" thick NY Jewish deli freshers for only 10 bucks. But like me, he's dreamin.
![]() On the bright side, Lavinia's sounds like good competition to Canoe, and I am all in favor of that! |

We always liked the Coe House, but recently...when it was good it was very VERY good, but when it was bad, it wasn't.
Best of luck in the new venture.

Is there any chance the new Lavinia's could have a lounge somewhere in the basement or someplace that sells three dollar, 16oz cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a big tv w/ the www.tennischannel.com?

It appears the owner of the Wide Open Saloon still thinks her building is suitable for such a business . Maybe you can get a good deal on a sub-let and throw a blue tarp over the wide open hole in the ceiling so that when it rains on bike week the bikers will stay dry enough but not too dry.

It will be interesting to see. Experience at Coe house was never anygood. One time was told could only have a 5:30 reservation and when we got there sitted at a four place table (we were six) and there was no one else in the place. Asked to change and said NO. Didn't go back for several years. Went last year and told had to be there by 5:30 pm and same thing. One table taken in room, we were only ones for rest of of our stay. Granted the food was pretty good but that didn't make up for the way we were handled.
Doubt I will go to Lavinas unless see Great reviews from here. |

Although I am very thankful that Lavinia's is going to sink their heart and soul into this, I have no harsh words for the Coe House. I thought that the wait staff were excellent, and I never had less than an excellent dinner there.
This is a historic site and no one should draw any conclusions about a new venture based upon past experiences with past ventures. The one thing that we can surmise that has a connection from one enterprise to the next, is that given the site, I bet the rent is pretty steep. |

So basically, the folks at Home Comfort - who owned and ran The Coe House - are making some changes: to the name of the restaurant and, it appears, adding a new chef. I liked The Coe House - the grilled polenta was awesome. Bring it back!

to say that we will be sure to make Lavina's a place that we go for dinner. The menu looks wonderful, with both moderately priced fair and a touch of upscale meals for the times that you want to have a special dinner. We'll have to boat over for a lunch-time lobster roll as well. Good luck with your changes.
(and keeping this thread on point...terrible)

With 25 years of being a chef, as well as a degree from the Culinary Institute of America, in his back pocket, Jeff comes to Lavinia's well-versed in how to meet and exceed guest expectations. He has a passion for utilizing local ingredients, and supporting local farmers; think: fresh! He's run kitchens ranging from high-volume casual, to upscale/fine dining--and has created Lavinia's menu to showcase the happy medium that falls between these two categories. In addition to all of this, he happens to be a great guy--ask for him when you visit, you'll be glad you did. And donnamatrix...if you 'liked' the Coe House, you're going to love Lavinia's! |

I scanned the posts quick and don't get it (maybe my fault.) So it's the same owners "reborn?" You know what they say about putting lipstick on a pig!! If the new place will be such a great experience wht not just "fix" the old one they had? I'm missing something.

It's not the same owners. The chef "Jeff" is a different Jeff chef. It will be interesting to see if this solves the problems. Most of the complaints I heard or read as the Coe House fell were associated with the service. Can't imagine how lipstick can help that.

Luke Dupuis, one of the Coe House owners IS one of the owners of Lavinia's. I don't see this as a problem or a retread, just a clarification. I have no idea who else (if anyone) owns it.

I am looking forward to trying Lavinia's. Most of the staff at Sandy Island park at Harilla, and the boat schedule makes getting to dinner, and back before the next boat, interesting at times. We've got limited options, and, although I like Canoe, the timing can be tough. It'll be nice to have somewhere else to try!!

How late will Lavinia's serve dinner on a weekend evening?
This past Friday night I called the Bob House at 8:40 to aske that question. The person who answered the phone sounded harried and unwelcoming. Even though we would have gotten there at 8:45 and she said that they were supposed to be open until 9, she also said, "We're pretty much done now." My husband said, "We should've stopped at Giusseppe's." Alrighty then. We continued on to El Mariachi where we're were welcomed with open arms. I'm hoping Lavinia's will be an option for us on our way to Moultonborough Neck when we've left southern NH after work on a Friday evening.

Don't feel you need to rush up to NH on Fridays--it's notoriously a later crowd on Fridays, due to those traveling up for the weekend. Give us a call and let us know you're on your way, and we'll make sure there's a spot for you. We keep a little 'buffer' time at the end of each evening, to accommodate late-comers. Hoping you'll make us a regular "refuel" stop on your trip north! |

I am an alumnus of Belknap College. Coe House was the girls' dorm during the '60's and 70's. I remember well having classes in the front rooms of the main house. I remember the 'Indian' shutters incased into the walls around the windows. I also remmeber the painted mural in one room. I would love to stop by and see how much it had changed since the college closed.
Congratulations in opening a fine dining experience in the area. You will find plenty of competition and that is the fun part. Good Luck!

Excited about the newest local restaurant.....I must say, we have reviewed the menu and it looks sensational. We can't wait to try it and we're particurarly looking forward to the pub atmosphere.
Home Comfort has done work for us this past year and also for many years before; one thing is for certain, Luke takes very good care of his customers. If there ever is a problem, he personally sees to it that a plan to not only rectify the problem is resolved appropriately and timely, but he ensures it never happens again! This is a business owner who takes customer service seriously and personally. BTW, we had a chance to meet Chef Jeff in Home Comfort last week and we were impressed. Can't wait for you to open Luke; we wish you, Ann and your entire team nothing but success in your new endeavor, we're sure it will be OUTSTANDING just like everything you do! |

I had the opportunity to try the menu a few days ago. Service, food, ambience and wine selections were fabulous! The menu is a nice mix of casual and elegant fare. I would definitely recommend it! The enlarged bar area is also very nice!

We went to Lavinia's last Saturday night and enjoyed ourselves. We sat in the bar area had fish & chips, chowder, pulled pork sandwich and two drinks --- it was good and we thought it was reasonably priced --- we will return and hope the best for them as it could easily be a go-to spot for us.

I have a reservation for Thursday night with friends. I am so looking forward to it. When we moved to Wolfeboro eleven years ago, the Coe House was a favorite of ours. Hopefully, Lavinia's will make it worth the trip again.

We decided to try Lavinia's this evening for dinner. The restaurant was actually not particularly busy; I suspect due to the fact that we are still technically in mud season. Note that there is no mud here and everything is actually mid summer dry. :-)
We were seated upstairs with a view of the lake. They have done quite a bit of remodeling and there are a number of dining rooms and two bars. The service was attentive without hovering and the dishes came out in a timely fashion. The food quality is extremely good especially compared with other lakes region restaurants. We tried the mushroom ravioli, lobster pie and pulled pork sandwich. The reviews were positive on all counts. Lavinia's has a seasonal dessert menu and the choices were too good to pass up. We tried the berries and cream...outstanding. I think that this is a big step up from Coe House across the board...atmosphere, service and a more contemporary menu (with high quality). Wish I could report the same. We went with friends. Service and atmosphere were great. We all had different entrees and all rated the food as okay. We will most likely not return. It is 30 minutes away for us.

We had a wonderful dinner at Lavinia's on Saturday evening. I had a wonderful mac and cheese fritter appetizer and a pulled pork sandwich. The others had clam chowder and beer battered fish and chips. We were extremely pleased with our meals and we thought the prices were reasonable. We chatted with the owner-Luke. He was very pleasant and cordial. We will definitely return very soon. It would be nice if the restaurant was also also open for lunch, but Luke said it will be dinner only and maybe brunch. He plans on staying open year-round.

It seems that Barbara's concern is more the 30 minute drive, she did say the service and atmosphere was great and food was ok. To some folks, 30 minute drive is a long drive....Hopefully if she and friends are over towards Center Harbor or Meredith, they may stop in again. She does seem to like the Wolfeboro scene, and that's ok.

I think you're right upthesaukee........seems strange that after all the rave reviews on the forum and from everyone I've talked to on the street, that not a single person in that party of four had anything nice to say about their meals.Seems like they might have gotten at least one right.Makes me wonder if there is not some other issue.
I'll bet if Barbara sent them a PM explaining her concerns, that it would be well received and acted on. |

I always read Barbara's enthusiastic restaurant comments and have no doubt that she is objective and knowledgeable. It is also well done for her to have PMd the folks at Lavinia's. However, had she been more specific about what was only "OK" about the food, it would have been more helpful to the Forum readers.

I think the issues we had were with sauces and seasonings on our entrees. That seemed to be at the crux of what each member of my group disliked about their dish. The entrees we had were statler chicken, hanger steak, Steal Lauren and pasta fra diablo. The owner has been in touch with me about my comments and I have never experienced such attentiveness to my views. He has been so receptive to my critique and wants to make right whatever we felt was wrong. This attitude and amazing customer service is reason enough for us to make another visit to Lavinia's. |

I wanted to elaborate on Cheff Jeff & I's expierence at Lavinia's. The food was awesome! We started off with the Seafood Cakes & they were out of this world, very little breading and large chunks of shrimp & scallop, the aioli dipping sauce was delicous. I ordered the Filet, Jeff rolled his eyes at me beacuse it was $30 but I felt I deserved it! And it was well worth it, we have eaten at high end steak houses in Miami & Boston & this was an excellent cut of beef, the sauce, mashed potatoes & asparagus were incredible. Jeff had the BBQ Pork Bellies that were braised and served over french toast with fresh fiddleheads, I didn't think I would really like it but it was awesome. Jeff who is sometimes hard to impress with food was blown out of the water. And for dessert we had the Chocolate Quiche with a Rocky Road topping and again awesome! We will be back for sure...
PS We sat in the pub with our two young kids, and they loved it as well. The service was great & we met some very nice diners sitting in the pub as well. |

So glad you might give them another try, Barbara. I've seen your restaurant reviews in the past and they are very fair and thoughtful. I'll bet that if you try some other entree's you might become a fan. My wife had the beef wellington and it was perfectly cooked with a beautiful pastry crust. I had the lobster pie and loved it. It was served under phyllo pastry with corn and potato's that add some depth to the sauce which, unlike most, wasn't overdone with sherry. Very light and creamy.

I just made reservations for Mother's Day at Lavinia's. They will be open from 11AM-8PM. They will be offering their regular menu along with some Mother's Day specials. My mom will be 91 in June. We are so blessed to still have her with us.

Came to the lake early today from MA. Stopped in Lavinia's for a quick bite. What a fabulous experience. Starting with the facility itself;it is gorgeous yet not stuffy. Neat, clean, bathrooms immaculate...just tastfully done in every way! The staff is attentive and friendly in a genuine manner. The food was superb yet priced fairly. The calamari was excellent, my marinated steak and my wife's burger cooked, garnished and served perfectly. Our very sharp waitress (Sue) was articulate, knowlegable and attentive to our every request, she was outstanding. Here's something you don't see very often....the owners, Luke and Ann Dupuis greeting and making it a point to walk to every table, speaking to customers and listening to reviews of the experience.......I must tell you, it is refreshing to see proactive owners going to the customer rather than the other way around. More restaurant owners in the lakes region should follow Luke's lead and get out from behind the desk or grill and talk to your customers...that connection and attention to detail is priceless!
We will definitely frequent Lavinia's again; Luke, Ann, Sue, Jeff and Team, kudos....you have established and set a new standard in the Center Harbor, Meredith, Moultonboro, Wolfeboro and Tuftonboro restaurant scene. NICE WORK! |

First visit to Lavinia's last evening and we were impressed with the changes. Physically, always a lovely restaurant, the enlargement and improvement of the Pub area is a big plus. The menu is eclectic, to say the least, with selections and prices which should please almost everyone. Our server, Haley, was enthusiastic and answered our questions about the food in an honest helpful, way. The food itself was creative and delicious. Even if you were not totally satisfied with the Coe House, you should try Lavinia's.
We're going back for my birthday.

Three of us Friday 6/8 at 6:30 with reservation. The scallop appetizer was underdone - sushi style. Clam chowder was good, the "crispy" calamari was sodden. We had one person order a Caesar salad and asked for it to be delivered after soup. The waiter brought during the soup and was told we weren't ready for it. Then we had to wait an extremely long time for entree delivery, and the place wasn't even crowded. The fish & chips were excelletn and the musroom ravioli quite good, although a little heavy. We were underwhelmed but will go back.

Thanks, donnamatrix, for your feedback. We're disappointed we didn't have our best foot forward the evening you dined with us, but very glad to hear you'll give us another try. We strive to make every diner's experience exceptional, but it appears we may have missed the mark this time, in a few areas.
Shared your comments with our team, which will undoubtedly make us better in the long run. Thanks again, hope to see you soon. The Lavinia's Team |

For years we thought about eating in the cupola but never got around to it until last week. It was a unique experience. The deal is that it is the regular menu but a 30% gratuity is added. We knew it was small and high up, but did not realize it was so small and so high up. My wife and I are relatively small but it is tight for the table for two. Can't move either chair because it hits the wall. Multiple very narrow flights of stairs to get there. But, the view is beautiful. We tried to order so the waitstaff would not have to come up unnecessarily. They earned the 30%.
We like the new Lavinia's and this might be an option for a very (by necessity) intimate special occasion for two.

We FINALLY made it to Lavinia's for dinner Monday evening, and it was nothing short of fabulous. My brother and I LOVED the scallop appetizer, and my husband raved about the calamari. The veal chop was cooked just the way we like it. Nice wine list. Excellent service. All in all, perfect in every way! We definitely will return. Thank you Luke!

Went tonight for our anniversary, the calamari appetizer was great, sweet and tender! I had the fish and chips and could only finish half. Hubby had seafood casserole and the portion was good, a bit of a smokey creamy flavor, loved it.
We had a great waiter - Eric, and will definitely be back again! THANKS! ![]() |

My wife and I went last night by boat. The Filet was perfect and the Seafood Caserole was excellent too. Nice wine and Christine and Brendon could not have been more gracious. Then we saw an awesome fireworks display for desert! Perfect night out in the boat with my wife cant wait to do it again!

Went tonight for the first time and was outstanding. Wife had fish tacos and I had the shepards pie. We enjoyed both and got to sit outside so services , atmosphere and food were all Great

We have visited Lavina's three times since our first visit (see post above - we liked it the first time).... we still like it alot.
We have had a variety of apps and mains and all have been very good (some include the lobster butter poached stack, calamari, fish tacos, fish and chips, sliders, lobster pot pie (only comment is the carrots in the lobster pie were a bit weird for my taste but understand the play on "pot pie"). We were at the lake last week and ended up there twice -- once with friends and once just ourselves. Tuesday night we arrived late 9:10/9:15 and was happy they were still serving. Luke and team keep up the good work - we appreciate and are enjoying your success. |

Overall we'd give it an 8.
Appetizers: Bruschetta and Scallops with Spinach Salad. Both were decent but nothing outstanding. Bruschetta could've been crispier and the scallops were a little on the cool side. Entrees: Wild Mushroom Ravioli (pictured)-very good and flavorful. Filet (also pictured)-easily the best meal of the four. Seafood Casserole-on the small side but very tasty. Chicken Pot Pie- major disappointment. Very bland with very little chicken. Service: Great-attentive and didn't hover. Atmosphere: Typical New England and very clean. We all decided we'd go back.
