Alton Bay photo

Been a visitor along this road since the early seventies (countless bike weeks'). And made this corner a hundred times on the way to the Weirs. I'm sure many of you have this masshole beat though!

Can I get a date on this old photo I recently purchased please? It appears a significant road isn't installed yet. In addition, I see; Bay View Pavilion, Shell gas $.17/gal and I recognize a standee Fro-joy sign just before the gas pumps and elec lights on the porch. Fro-Joy inserted Babe Ruth baseball cards in their ice cream 1927 -1928. I believe this company was established in the mid late teens-early twenties. Need to dig deeper.

Also, seems Sandy Point was a larger peninsula at one time. If that's the piece of land out in the Bay, of course.

That is a really cool photo!

A little research would put my guess at the 1930's (might be late 20's), based on the vehicle parked at the pavilion and the price of gas on the pump sign.

Gas prices by year since 1919.

The unknown is how old (read how long the owners had them) those vehicles are in the photo.

That picture was taken in October 1931. We have that same picture at the Alton Historical Society. It's probably been copied at some point. I just saw it posted on ebay.....Marty

This one had better be original. Unlikely they were produced from the same negative around the same date, aka Type 1s. And I have no reason to believe it's a restrike, thusfar. (I collect old prewar baseball cards, memorabilia etc.)

Here is a scan of the Societies picture. It was given to the Society about a year-year and a half ago. The border you see along the top edge is along the other edges, it got cropped when I scanned it. It's a great shot, almost all the buildings are still standing, except for the small building on left, about where the bath rooms are now and the Pavillion has been rebuilt in the same spot after the fire. The building in the middle of the picture, between Victory Pier and the train station is the RR freight/baggage building which now sits at Gillans Boat Yard. It was moved there by the Shoorocks, owners of the Reptile Zoo Gift Shop and put alongside the shop. The gift shop is gone, but the freight building still stands. I posted a picture of it I took in 2006....Marty

Marty, good stuff. Both images are identical, yep.

Just rec'd my photo. It's a real photo, profesionally shot, crystal clear and highly detailed. It has been trimmed -neatly, but irregularly scissor-cut. Shows the edge of that ornate border seen on your copy on all sides. Possibly trimmed to fit a postcard album. I wonder now, if these were perhaps a souvenir photo, sold in a shop close by? It's 3.5 x <5.5"

On the reverse, there is period hand typing and not typeset print, "Road to Steamboat Wharf Alton Bay, New Hampshire". Also, there is a lightly stamped "697" in red, in typical vintage photograph developing shop style. Though postcard-size, the stock is very thin.

Does your copy have a similarly marked reverse?

There may be others that could appear over time. Folks should keep their eyes open!

That is a really cool picture. It's neat how much of that landscape really hasn't changed that much. That store (minus the gas pumps) is basically still there (or a current version of it). I wonder what the permit process was like to be able to put gas storage tanks in the ground that close to Lake Winni? :-D That train line ran right through Samoset where the fire road is now. If I had a time machine, I'd go back and ride that line. Then I'd have lunch with Benny (Ames Kimball) at his castle.
