Any Moose?

Been coming up to Winni summers for thirty years as well as a few times through the fall and winter yearly but have never seen any Moose south of N. Conway. Any full timers seen any lately? Seems more likely on the Turtonboro Side i'm sure.

I live in Alton Bay, and we have had moose in our yard, our neighbor's yard, on the D snowmobile trail between Alton Mt. Rd and Mt. Major, on rte 11 A on the way up the hill from rte 11, and almost hit 3 who were running together just east of the entrance to Gunstock.

Long and short of it, they are all over NH but you just have to be at the right place at the right time. Like so many other things in life, timing is everything.

Talk to locals in your area, and they may tell you where to go to have a higher likelihood to see one.

I've seen them a handful of times in Tuftonboro over the past 35 years. Even back in the day they didn't seem plentiful in this area.

Our summer camp is in laconia near the Meredith line. We have seen deer, a fox, a mother bear and a cub, and turkeys! Our neighbor said he had a moose in his yard but that was"years ago". Early spring last year I thought I saw a silver wolf but when I called for others to come look, it was gone. Everyone said it was probably a dog but I don't think so.

Lucky you. I live by Christmas Island and haven't seen anything on 4 legs other than squirrel, and half the time they stand! I was excited when I accidently left trash out one night and woke to a mess. I figured there WAS wild life in my area. I put out a critter cam and caught the vermin in question, a neighbor's cat. I know there's plenty of animals around here but I never see prints or hear anything, which tells me they are much smarter than me. In contrast my family in Waltham routinely sees coyote, fox, deer, fishers, raccoon and possum and that's in the city! "Rescuing" deer in winter from the lakes ponds and reservoir is not uncommon for Boston and surrounding city fire departments.

You'd think I'd at least see deer on Christmas Island

I've seen two in the 7 years I have lived here. On in the marshy area by the 19 Mile Bay store and one right down the street from where I live in Suissevale. (Moultonborough) The only way I knew one was close is I heard it calling out....

We had one wandering on the edge of ash cove right across from us a few months ago!!!! Quite a sight! However, it seems like that land is being developed so I'm guessing the critters big and small will be moving soon! If I knew how to post pictures, I'd be able to share, but, alas, I'm technologically challenged!!!

We left our camp early one morning and headed further north.at the parking lot at the Willey house in the white mountains we were lucky enough to see a mother moose and her little one. know it's not in the lakes region but maybe they will wander down someday.

I always see them during the day ( in Oct. ) on Rt 25 in Tamworth. I see one or two every fall.

We have not seen moose in our yard for about two years but we saw fresh moose tracks today about 1/2 mile up-slope from home at about 1,000' elevation. They have tough walking in this deep crusty show but the snowshoeing for us was easy going today. A lot of the area was clear cut a few years ago so the growth of saplings makes for good browsing for the moose.

Of course according to Arlo you might see one at your window:

Mooses come walking over the hill
Mooses come walking, they rarely stand still
When mooses come walking they go where they will
When mooses come walking over the hill

Mooses look into your window at night
They look to the left and they look to the right
The mooses are smiling, they think it's a zoo
And that's why the mooses like looking at you

Of seeing the mooses go over the hill

We also saw a small doe taken down by a bobcat last night. It was right where the deer had bedded down, taken by surprise.

I see that many of you have fallen for the "NH Unicorn" myth. Next you will be telling us you've seen Nessie Ness and Bigfoot!

I've spent every summer of my life in NH, now living here full time for the past 2 years. I have yet to see this supposedly real creature. I can't believe how many allegedly sane, credible people profess to believe in this hoax!

Even my dear wife is under the spell. Last winter, while driving on Kings Highway to Wolfeboro, she claims she saw a pair of moose (meeses?), a mom and offspring. She even took a picture through the windshield with her phone as they walked into the woods. Those supposed rumps look suspiciously like the tree trunks around them to me. Moose indeed! Next she'll be showing me alleged pictures of the Easter Bunny on the ice!

I fear that many of you are suffering from severe symptoms of cabin fever. Though those of you who have posted pictures of these NH Unicorns clearly have very good Photoshop skills.

Sorry for the wording, it was the results that we saw. (skip the following if squeamish) Carcass still unfrozen, relatively small amount consumed, obvious sign of nearby struggle/blood next to spot where the deer had laid down, bite marks to neck and base of skull. Clear prints of a single cat, round, no claw marks, front about 2.25" across, rear slightly smaller, stride about 12". If the cat was in the area it would have heard us coming a long ways off.

Enjoyed Mooses come walking....
Was sad to read about the bobcat and doe. Understand it's survival but once saw a hawk grab a baby duck and had to console a 7y/o for over 2 hrs. A lesson was learned. No matter how cute Don't feed the wildlife! Unless they are hummingbirds (which we do have three feeders!) Back to the Mooses!

My brothers family has lived in NH in Brookfield for over 20 years.My niece has never seen a moose. She can't believe we have seen 3 ! Glad to say we have pictures of 2 to prove it!
Alas, I do fear I am suffering from cabin fever.bring on the Jimmy Buffet music!

Just wondering as it would be pretty amazing to see live (as long as my 5 yer old daughter wasn't standing by my side). I hate to see any animals suffer but there's a heck of a lot more deer in New Hampshire than there are bobcat (~85,000 deer vs. ~1,400 bobcats).

In the 3/5/14 issue of the NY Times, there is an article and video addressing the loss of Moose populations throughout the "lower 48"... down 50% in Minnesota, 48% in NH. I was skeptical about that number, but confirmed with a senior wildlife biologist at NHF&G - and it is true. In MN this year, the Moose hunt was cancelled due to the lack of moose. This is a rather disturbing event. In MN, the F&G department has been working on collaring moose and finding them when their heart stops beating. Could be predator kill, or whatever. F&G is trying to determine if the tick population or the spread of brain worm (from deer) is the cause of death in so many moose. Also, climate change: they do not do well in heat. Still pretty alarming statistics.

That is so funny. My step-son always alleged that moose were a complicated marketing scheme. He did see a moose butt on Bean Road but he insists this was someone in a moose suit. It is ironic that people see Big Foot but can't find a moose.

For the record we have seen 5 in the last 10 years including one on Long Island.

I've seen a few moose around my place on Winnipesaukee; however, the only time I'd seen two moose, they were knee-deep browsing on vegetation in Merrymeeting Lake!

The lake or the river? Almost all of the lake shore is free of vegetation and very sandy. However, the Merrymeeting River basin is an ideal habitat for moose (that is, IF they existed )

No hunting in my blood. I am just dying to see one. My entire family has seen them and the big joke for years has been trying to get me to see a moose. We drive around at dusk sometimes in search but nothing yet. They even offered to take me to moose Alley in Pittsburgh NH but thats like going to the aqaurium to see a fish. I have seen deer and bear enough, I just want to see a moose

Go for a snowmobile ride up north with me next winter. The only problem I have with them is I tend to hit them when they jump out in front of me.
