We know a couple of the lifeguards at Ellacoya, that must be a terrible experience. I was a lifeguard when I was younger and had to rescue a couple of people but never had to deal with death or even trying to resuscitate someone.

It is also very sad that someone died while doing something so innocent as swimming with friends. I would like to know more of the details of what happened, wonder if they will ever release that information.

Heartfelt condolences to the friends and families as well, horrible tragedy for sure...

Default Safety Reminder

This post reminds me of a very helpful link that was provided last year about surface drowning.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning

It's very sad to hear of people getting hurt or even worse, dying on our beautiful lake. I think this a good reminder that enjoying the "Smile of the Great Spirit" is also about safety.

I reenforce this with everyone and anyone, especially people coming to visit for the day and still with people I know who live here or are here all the time. Drowning is nothing like it is portrayed on TV / film. It is silent and quick and you have to be very vigilant, especially with the younger kids. I cringe when I see groups of kids playing chicken or 'king of the dock' or anything like that. Don't want to be a stick in the mud, but it's a lot better option then someone drowning from a simple knock on the head or accident...

Default Thanks Cate

The drowning message has to be said over and over again.

I will repeat myself, again. Kids and PFDs. I have never heard of a child drowning from a vessel that was underway. Yet, that is the only time that PFDs are required to be warn by children 12 and under.

Kids no not drown from moving boats. They drown at the dock, at the beach, in the pool, in the brook, etc.

It happens. The family is heading out to the island. Parents are huffing food, and other stuff from the car to the boat. Dad thinks that Mom is watching Junior and Mom thinks that Dad is watching. It is quiet and happens fast.

Please PFDs on kids near the water. I'll get off of my band wagon now.

I heard that the lifeguard at the beach did a great job in a tough situation.

Misty Blue.

Swimming lessons...... everyone should know how to swim. I don't know the circumstances of this gentleman's death, he may have been a good swimmer and had another problem. But in my opinion all children should get swimming lessons at an early age. Adults who don't know how to swim should also take lessons. Personally I think a swim test should be part of the requirement at some point during school, the earlier the better, many deaths would be prevented.

The guy was 27 and apparently intoxicated and fully clothed, including still having his shoes on. So who really knows what the hell he was thinking at the time...
