Anyone feel the earthquake on Monday night, around 10:45? Here in Moultonborough, it sounded and felt like a large explosion. Lasted only second or so and mildly shook the house. This morning, the news reports a magnitude 1.4 earthquake, 8 miles NE of Meredith.

We heard what we thought was an explosion, but we didn't feel anything.

Is that something that happens with any regularity in the region?

The White Mountains weren't always mountains!
Some of us remember the "Big One" in October of 2012, 4.6 Mag. I remember the damage it caused. We've since rebuilt. |

When I bought my last house in Gilford the mortgage company made me get "Earthquake" insurance. It was not very expensive at all but I thought the bank was nuts....maybe they know something! For the record, the only noise I heard last night in "The Acres" was Peyton Manning imploding!

NH Earthquakes:
There have been over 200 earthquakes felt in New Hampshire in the 20th century. The strongest measured NH earthquakes to strike NH came only 4 days apart on December 20th and December 24, 1940, each with a magnitude of over 5.5, The epicenter was near Tamworth, NH. and felt over an area of 400,000 square miles! More recently, on October 16, 2012 at 7:12pm a moderate earthquake was felt in much of NH. The earthquake's epicenter was located near Hollis, Maine. A magnitude of 4.0 was recorded by the US Geological Survey. Only minor damage was reported which mostly included cracks in building foundations, masonry, plaster and tile.
