Why not select a special or interesting slab of wood that catches your eye and bring it to one of the sign concessions. You could pencil out your letters or stencil some art work and just let them use the router to cut it out.
You could stain it after and have a pretty classy sign for $20 or so.

Great idea! If the sign shop was too expensive to router what you wanted you could try this:

I bought a pice of pine at Lowe's that was already shaped and routered around the edges. They sell them as blanks in the sign department. I took it to Gator Signs in Gilford and he cut out the letters on a sheet of vinyl and placed the vinyl sheet on the wood. I painted the letters like a stencil and then removed the vinyl.

It was cheap and it looks like a hand painted custom sign.

In my neighborhood at the lake everyone had a sign on their cottage with their family name; the Smiths, the Jones, etc and we were just a mix of people who didn't share the same last name. We referred to ourselves as a "lovely bunch of Coconuts". We went to a craft fair at Gunstock once upon a time where they were selling wooden letters. You can find these wooden letters at most unfinished furniture stores or at Michael's Craft Store or A.C. Moore's. We made our own sign. It's simple!!

Default Eagle as a "sign"

A friend of mine told me that if a home has an eagle type plaque attached to the outside that it means your home is mortgage free. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

...slightly off-topic....but I see a lot of five-pointed stars, maybe three feet across in size, attached to the outside of individual homes where the star can be seen from the road....always wondered what these stars are all about....are people just seeing stars or something....is it a signal to the incoming aliens from outer space.......beep-beep-beep?

When I first started seeing all those stars, I wondered the exact same thing! I wondered if it was a religious thing or something. So I asked a couple of people that had them finally and they said they are just decorations.

Yep, we have them as decorations in the island bunkhouse.

We always were told the pineapple signified financial success.

But flying like an eagle sounds better.

I never heard the Eagle story (but I may have to add one of THOSE to the sign), but "we were always told" that the Pineapple represented Hospitality. Seen often in signs for restaurants and Inns.

I always heard the pineapple represented hospitality too, or welcome. Same thing really.

I had a very nice sign made a while back, as a gift for a friend's home purchase. I worked with Cedarsignsonline on Etsy.com. It looks like their prices have gone up, though...
