In search of a used Kayak for a good price

Checkout some of the businesses that rent kayaks. They often sell the used ones that they no longer use as rental inventory.

Good advice Bernie Girl......

I did just that, went to a business that rented kayaks, and got a REALLY nice used kayak at about 1/2 price of new. There's also the option of using Craigslist to find a used kayak. Usually, the rental companies turn-over their rental inventory every couple years, and they're open to offers.

Let's face it.... if you buy a new kayak and pay full price, use it a couple times, getting a few scrapes an scatches on it, it's now used !

Most likely you can find a better quality 'used' kayak, for the price of a new
lower level kayak.

Just my opinion.......

Scrapes and scratches are inevitable...

I learned that when wifey (fiancé at the time) bought me a new fiberglass canoe.

After its maiden voyage I flipped it over to see what looked like a scratching post for a lion! Scary as they were, there were never any negative effects of the scratches.

Roll it forward many years...

I was buying a canoe at Dick's Sporting Goods and the sales associate went out back to get me one. Upon presenting it to me I turned it over and recoiled in horror. There were scratches!!!

$50 of additional discount later I had a nice canoe and was heading out to add a few scratches of my own.

Scratches are indeed inevitable. However, the more scratches - the more drag. At the start of each year I take fine sandpaper and smooth out the larger gouges (always rubbing fore-aft) and then apply a thin coat of wax to make it all even (think skis).

We were in Sam's earlier this week, and saw sit on Kayaks with paddle for $179. Add a PFD and your are off and paddlin'

Try Canoe King in Tamworth for a huge selection and possibly used kayaks. I picked mine up at Parafunalia in Gilford. Haven't been in there for a while so I can't say whether they still have good selection. I've also seen them at BJ's for cheap $.

Check out the L.L Bean store in Concord. It is an outlet store and as such has Kayaks that have slight blemishes, e.g. paint imperfection, scratch, etc.

My wife got her Kayak there. She got a beautiful Old Town Dirigo 120 and saved a lot of money. They always have a good selection. Give them a call

I think I'll try the wax this year but I think most of my drag comes from BBQ.
