I came across this 2-3 day old scat on the Blue trail about 0.2 miles from the summit of Red Hill. This picture isn't great but the scat looks just like the wolf scat that I see in Alaska, i.e. grayish and full of hair. Could this be from a coyote or is someone's dog chowing down on squirrels and rabbits?

What a surprise to find an existing thread on exactly what I needed.
We ran across this out on the island last week. Can somebody help with identification? I'm hoping it's not what our guest told us it was. |

What you guys have photographed is definitely bear scat, Just consider the dark black color alone. TRB is correct with respect to Deer Feces, lighter in color round.and far less dense. I should know having lived here in Center Harbor for the past 15 yrs and have often stepped in both!!

This summer our family discovered some black clumpular "poop" by our house.
The experts among us declared it to be from a bear as it looked very much like the two pics above. As vistors came to see us we made sure to take them over to the site where the bear poop could be viewed up close. After a month of convincing ourselves and everyone else that the stuff was 100% genuine bear doo, my son decided to confirm its pedigree by taking it into his hand and sniffing it! While all assembled gagged and winced, he declared "it's asphalt". Not willing to take the rap for misguiding the group I responded... "Bears eat pavement? Who knew?" |

Nope that's deer scat. Its just dried up a bit. Deer scat would typically be greenish and slimy when fresh. As it dries it darkens to a black color. Someone referenced a clump above. Likely also deer scat. You can see a clumping of pellets depending on what the deer maybe feeding on at the time. Many believe the clumps are sign of a buck being around but that is not necessarily true. Does also can produce clumps.

Sorry for the late reply. Our guest - from the south - said the thought it was bear scat.
He is a deer hunter and said he was pretty sure it was NOT deer |

There is NO question that what is pictured above comes from the backside of a DEER. Bear do not poop little tiny pellets...

What remains after a visit from a bear can be grizzly.

The week of Christmas I could have sworn I saw some Bear scat in the woods, is it possible they were still out or came back out of hibernation since it was so warm ? Maybe they were confused as we were?
