Took photo this afternoon. I had to laugh at the Bob house on the right which says, "The Place to Be" - right now it has prime waterfront and soon it may be in the lake! The forecast is calling for warmer days with highs near 50 on Sunday through Tuesday. I hope they can remove the bob house in time.

Took these photos of Lake Waukewan this afternoon - a very different story for ice conditions. This lake has been frozen over for at least a couple of weeks now and has 10 to 12" of ice (at least it did.) Hard to believe that it's right around the corner from Meredith Bay. A very smart decision to move the Pond Hockey tournament to this lake. Hopefully the ice will hold until next weekend.
I'm posting these photos for all the folks that live out of state and want to know the conditions up here in the Lakes Region for pond hockey, ice fishing, sledding, etc.

We are heading up sometime next week as well. I'm kind of watching the weather. There is a prediction of rain which I'd like to avoid. I'd like to get a little fishing in and some snowboarding at gunstock. I'll look for you on the ice if its safe. I've got a blue Clam portable "bob tent".

Here's the forecast for the month of February.....unseasonably warm! I'll take it after the past 2 winters!
http://http://www.accuweather.com/en...monyr=2/1/2016 I skied at Gunstock this morning; it was a beautiful day. The conditions were very hard and icy in spots, but good considering we haven't had much snow. Gunstock has been blowing snow on the terrain park all week; just wish they would spread around the snowmaking on other trails that need a good cover! ![]()

Ice turned black yesterday, with open water along shore of West side of Bear Island. Exactly like ice-out. Surprised to see any ice today. We HAD maybe 3 inches thick along Bear Island, on side of boathouse, in total shade. Ice-out before Ice-in??

I wonder if that bob house will still be "The Place to Be" come Thursday? Or maybe it will just be the place to be bass fishing new underwater structure this Spring?

Saw a couple of skaters come from Levitt Park and around 3 Mile Island today. I was sure I was going to have to grab a kayak and pluck them out of the water but they appeared to make it as far as I could tell.

I hate to be the party pooper but seriously? All you have to do is peruse the 10 day forecast to realize there is very little chance of safe ice on the main part of the lake and once you're into February I can't see how safe ice can form barring a tremendous drop in temps.

The next 6 or so days look to be above freezing the majority of the time, but the weather into the 2nd week of Feb looks to be a bit below freezing the majority of the time.
I still think we'll see some usable ice form going into February, but I don't think we're going to get the kind of winter-activities season we've had the last couple of years.

Laconia Daily Sun posted a "late breaking news" article on FaceBook that the Meredith Rotary Fishing Derby has been postponed for 2 weeks until February 27th and 28th due to the unsafe ice conditions.

Climate Change. Oh, wait, that is too political. I withdraw the comment.

Had hoped to get out ice fishing this weekend, but no way....ice is very slushy in Meredith. Can actually see the sand on the bottom through the ice/slush. In any event, here is a shot of tonight's sunset....

Wolfeboro Bay earlier today: lots of ice, which looks solid (thin but no holes) all the way out to the lake. But there's lots of water near the docks. That big patch in the foreground is where the water is flowing in from Back Bay.

Here are some pics from yesterday. The first four are from Waukewan, the next two from my friend's house on Meredith Bay and a couple more from the town docks in Meredith. Hoping it gets cold enough at night to refreeze what melts during the day this week.

Janet, I'm guessing you mean the house in the background. That's the house next door to his and from what I understand it is a rental. His house has been owned by his family since 1971 and I don't think they rent it out. Yes, it's on Pinnacle Park Road.

PCTim, thanks. The house next to your friends is called "The Pines". My family rented the house the month of August for many years beginning in the 1950s. I think your friends house is "The Birches" and the house next to that "The Oaks". Might even have met your friend. Small world.

Traveled along Rt 11 yesterday took some ice shots (or lack thereof) along the way:
Pic 1: From Lincoln Park - no ice in sight Pic 2: At Ellacoya - no ice in sight Pic 3: Alton Bay - ice on all of bay but no bob houses north of back bay bridge. One bob house was half submerged, going to be real difficult to get out when it freezes up. Pic4: All bob houses in lower bay were moved off to shore near both boat launches |

You can see snowmobile tracks viewing the Moultonboro Bay Cam.
Does anyone have any info regarding the ice thickness and conditions in this area? Thanks in advance. Cobalt |

Drove through Meredith a couple hours ago and "The Place to Be" was in between two open water spots with a group of people frantically trying to get it off as water appeared to be coming up.

At least a dozen snowmobiles went by in the M'boro Bay area today. Still plenty of open water around the rocks, but there seems to be safe passage.

That was me and frantically is a drama word you are using... With a solid 8 inches of ice we were moving to a little higher grounds from the warmer weather we had ...actually had about 10 people having a great time watching the beautiful sunset on Lake Winni but thank you for making our Bobhouse the talk of the town

The spot there next to the docks where everyone usually accesses the ice is froze over, the ice eaters at Sheps were not running. There is a barge parked next to the docks think it belongs to Ambrose. I walked out about 10 feet from shore, chopped a hole in the ice - maybe 3 inches... that's a big maybe. Ventured out a little farther ~ 30 feet or so chopped another hole, about the same thickness. I did not go any further. Gingerly made it back to dry land. Looking across there was evidence of wet spots in the snow all over the place. To me looked way to variable with long narrow bands of wet snow/ice that stretched in some places nearly all the way across between Bear and the mainland. Now there is somebody travelling back and forth across between Sheps and the island with an air boat or hovercraft. The path taken is clearly visible and it's pretty clear that it's breaking through the ice out there as it crosses. The chunks of ice looked to be maybe 3" thick as well. With the cold weather I would expect the ice to build some, but with there being snow on top now to insulate it probably not build as quickly as one would hope. What bothered me were the areas that were wet, how good is the ice anywhere near those spots, probably not very. To be honest with the varying temps mostly being north of freezing I would be over all concerned about the integrity of what is there. It just hasn't been cold long enough to be confident that there is a good solid base of ice. I may go check it out again this weekend but I'm to chicken to make the first crossing. There was no sign of anyone being out on the ice at all. That said there were trucks and bob houses out on 19 mile bay! |

Not surprised by your findings. Hoping the coming cold snap helps but the warming trend thereafter diminishes my expectations that we'll have safe passage over the ice to Mink Island this winter. The days are getting longer too. I look for a good 7 inches of black ice off the town dock before I will head out through Cattle Landing.
Appreciate the update. |

Here ya go, what it looked like last Sunday. Is it any more promising now? Only way to find out is to go check it out.
The ice along the docks there was more like slush... no substance to it at all. |

Well, well, well, and my, my, my; today is February 12, 2016 and having just looked at the Snake Eyes cam, it sure looks like that area, out in the broads, has frozen over, except for one small spot, so's how about that, and well, well, well, and my, my, my!
And, which United States president who was 6'4" tall, was born on February 12, 1809 .....just 207 years ago?

Ice in declared yesterday by Emerson aviation, but he noted that a lot of the ice appeared to be new ice, and could be as thin as a quarter-inch, and recommended a lot of caution.

Appreciate the update. I'm thinking of coming up to test the ice this weekend on foot with my manual ice auger. In years like this, I will go around behind Dolly Island to avoid the sketchy area at Cattle Landing. Elsewhere the ice tends to be pretty consistent in thickness except to the north of the channel between Mark and Bear where the shallower area can be a bit iffy.
The view from my IP camera has shown the area north of Mink fully locked in for over 10 days. Last spot to lock up was out by the channel. |

Yeah I'm thinking the exact same thing of heading out this weekend as well. I hope to get one final update tomorrow which I will post as well if I get any updated info. My only concern is that update I got was before it got warm and rained. Can't imagine that did much damage but one never knows!

Most of the lake appears safe, and much is, but be extra careful. In the past few days, I've seen unsafe ice in unexpected spots. This is no normal year.

The rain may have oddly help it, seemed like quite of melted snow and we had standing water on the ice after the rain, we did get maybe 3-4in of snow before it rained. That all froze over again, it was 8 this morning.

Update to my last report earlier this week, no change in status even after the rain, the ice remains in good shape between Sheps and Bear - however I would caution anyone to check for themselves before venturing out and that ice conditions do vary so be careful out there if you do head out! As sketchy as the weather has been this year if the ice looks bad or thin it's more than likely to be what it looks like.
Weather suggests some snow may fall tonight into tomorrow so be extra careful as the ice may be covered up with a thin layer of snow. |

Relaxed ICE: I have sailed (DN Class Iceboat) on 2 inches of stress relieved Black ICE. As I sailed along I could see the ICE "Flex" below me...bulge downward as I sailed over it. Just my experience. ![]() PS: The last time I sailed on Winni in an Ice Boat was On April 1, out of Glendale. Light air..lots of holes 30 feet in diameter) where Bob Houses had been. We sailed for maybe 20 minutes, then got off the ice. We couldn't see the holes until we were on top of them. Dangerous. Last edited by NoBozo; 02-19-2016 at 07:43 PM. |

Ice Update and excursion to Bear Island.
Yesterday morning I took off to BI. Made it out there, but I will caution anyone thinking of making that trip, don't do it the ice conditions are way to variable and there are a number of pressure ridges out there that have fairly large gaps in the ice with open water. It's simply not adviseable to go out there - my guess we are 3 to 4 weeks away from ice out, what is out there will not last long. I for one will not attempt another crossing, except by boat when the ice is out. |

I gave up yesterday on heading out towards Mink Island today. Too much warm weather and not enough ice. The pic from my IP Cam showed a lot of surface water even at 8 in the morning. Given the weather forecast for the next week, I think the lake will remain unsafe the rest of this season.
Here's hoping for an early ice-out! |

I think I sat out the entire winter in 2010 (Ice Out declared March 24th) and got out to the island once in 2012 (Ice Out March 23).
If that's any indication, then we're about 5 weeks away from ice out.... Last edited by Mink Islander; 02-22-2016 at 05:55 AM. Reason: Date wrong |

This has been a tough year for winter activities. It was in the mid 50s saturday around here and is supposed to be the same this Thursday.
For those that venture on the ice, please use caution and consider buying some ice picks. |

I was surprised to see a Bob house infront of our place on Winnisquam, as it has been open water most of the winter. From my camera this morning it looks like he moved it a bit last night.
Looking across the lake I only saw a few people on foot over near the state park. I did not venture on the ice as I was by myself and my access was not very good; looked like a lot of water on top of the smooth ice along the shore. So I cleaned my gutter and left. Also odd was the pint water bottles I left in the crawl space had not fully frozen. |

Piece of advice--if you are going to venture out on the ice, take some small wood blocks and tie a length of string between them long enough to go from one sleeve through the other on your jacket. Put a nail or screw through each block. May seem a little janky, but if you fall through the ice, they'll be there for you to grab on to and pull yourself out with.
Given that's the only way to safely be on the ice on most of the lake...I'll pass, and keep looking forward to a late march ice-out.

If they haven't cancelled it by now It's highly unlikely they will... Per their facebook page right now its a go.
For the first time in many years I have decided to stay home... Good luck if you go and be safe! Dan

Haley Lapointe did a live feed from Meredith, talking to someone from the Derby. He said it is on, that it is a statewide event, that fishermen have been fishing for centuries and know how to do it safely. He simply cautioned everyone to be safe, fish on safe ice, and have a good time.
I agree with Ishoot308... I'll stay off the ice too. ![]()

And besides, if the ice fishing derby is cancelled, the Rotary Club as well as the local hotels would probably have to refund all their entry ticket and reservations money.....which is, all by itself, an excellent reason not to cancel the derby.

How does one determine if the ice is "safe"?
Going out and cutting holes seems to be a catch 22 for figuring this out. ![]() |

Cut the first hole in water you know you can walk back to shore from. Work out from there. My preferred method is to let someone else try it first, but I have used the above method also.

Lol, oh, that's what she meant. I go to about 3 feet of water, drill a hole, if the ice is at least 5 inches thick I go another 20 feet. If I fall in at 3 feet, my shoes and pants get wet, I walk back, hasn't happened yet. If the next hole less than 5" I'm done, my limit, others will do less maybe 4 inches, that's still safe for walking. I'll usually drill 5 or 6 holes if I'm unsure, 20 or so feet at a time. I always carry ice picks too.

...... for just 22-cents, u can buy a very sturdy 6" galv common nail at Lowe's which probably qualifies to be a spike ......so by having two of these spikes attached to a thin line, that's running up your sleeve, across your shoulders, and down the other sleeve; you have a gripper system to claw your way back out of the water, and onto the ice. It's truly amazing how much strength one has in this situation......at least for the first 60-seconds.
So, I plan to be selling these home made ice grips, from a spot on solid ground that's close to the derby hq, for the very low price of just $14.95/set. Got to make it when u can!

Since it is statewide I assume a lot of the smaller lakes that have a good coating of ice will be overwhelmed with people fishing them. Should be an interesting weekend.

Looks like the open water has done return-eth ......at least the open water I can see looking out from my mega-million dollar waterfront mcmansion ........ just in the last few hours....located between Bear-Mark-Governors Islands.....maybe 1/2-mile x one mile in size ......what was ice is now open.
........... ....... oopsie-doopsie......must make a correction to my above comments about the open water.....and just getting home at about 5:15 and taking a good look at the lake .....it is, in fact, all frozen solid with no open water as I said above......my bad and apologies offered for that incorrect comment......apparently I was fooled by what must have been a lot of standing water that was rippling with the breeze and certainly seemed like open water, but now about 3-hours later is all ice. Sorry about that!
