Pi$$ed me off!!

I wasn't going to post this rant but it's the 2nd time in 2 weeks that I've seen this happen.

I'm coming down the channel out of West Alton marina on Saturday afternoon, right behind a nice Crown Line boat (no name) with a man and woman in it heading out to enjoy our amazing lake, both smoking cigarettes and flicking the ashes in the lake. You might already know where this is going.

As they smoked away I thought to myself, buddy "don't do it, don't do it, don't do it". Just before we get to the sandbar, the guy (wearing a "Jeter" shirt) throws the butt right overboard into the water. I got so mad I started shaking.

I yelled "HEY...you dropped your cigarette butt. Don't worry I'll get it". He turned around and looked at me as I reached over the side and picked it up out of the water and held it up in the air for him to see. He had no reaction. The woman at least had the decency to put hers out in her Mic Ultra beer can. I have questions:

1. What makes dummies like this think it's ok to throw the butts from their filthy habit into the lake like it's their own 26 mile long ash tray?
2. What makes dummies like this think that others will think it's ok for them to throw their butts in the lake?

I wonder how many butts they threw in the lake the rest of the day.

It makes me want to go to his house and throw my empty beer cans on his front yard. Pissed me off???? Yup.

I know it's part of a much bigger problem and it's been discussed here before.

That's all I got to say about that.

Yup. People don't care. I once scolded a guy crossing Main Street in Meredith for dropping a burning butt in the middle of the road. I screeched at him for littering, and reminded him that we were (at that time) in a bad fire zone. He wanted to kick my lights out.

Oh, so you are the person that I follow around the golf course, or the hiking trail, or just walking down the street.

When I was in the military, we were taught to field strip our cigarette butts. Because I smoked filtered cigarettes, I ended up with a back pocket filled with filter tips. Sure did not make points with my wife for not emptying them when I got home.

Seems to me they should get rid of the filters, then this wouldn't be as big an issue.

Butts are litter. If they were caught dropping it, they'd be fined. It makes me crazy to see them on the ground or anywhere in our lake. Flying out a car window in a drought...

As I see it, sadly, addicted smokers don't really realize that they have accumulated a bunch of irritating and rude habits, and they go through life committing these habits and don't really realize what they are doing. How you feel about it is totally irrelevant to them.

I've often wondered if they grind them out on the kitchen floor? Bet they use an ashtray. When my wife and I smoked we kept a "beanbag" ashtray in the boat.

What's fun is the A-hole in front of you on the highway who throws the lit butt out the window while I'm on my motorcycle. Nice spark explosion in the face is always pleasant.

They shouldn't throw butts anywhere! Especially the lake!!

Years ago, we had to clean up lots of filters that came to the beach in the spring form ice activities.
That has all pretty much gone away. Over time, the other butts will diminish. Yes, sooner is better than later.
I hope threads like this one will make smokers, spitters and others more aware that "carry in, carry out" applies to lakes as well as to parks, hiking trails, etc.
Mostly, I think, smokers are older than teens and have been tossing butts overboard for a long time. Habit, not bad intention.

And people who let their dogs crap on sidewalks. I often ponder what makes these people different.

I had a neighbor who let their dog crap on the sidewalk near me. One day I confronted him and told him what he was doing was against the law. He replied, "The law does not apply to me". I called the cops and had them have a little talk with him...Alphonso doesn't let his dog crap on the sidewalk anymore.

Get the boats CF# and report them for littering. A butt for evidence would be great...

I worked pumping gas when I was a lad and few times had people pull up and while I was pumping their gas a hand would come out the window and dump their ash try on the ground. The garbage can was on the other side of the car but they just couldn't be bothered. Some people are just slobs.

One time on my motorcycle, same thing, except the butt landed in my lap and went up my shorts. I was lucky I didn't drop the bike.

Absolutely amazing. My wife and I ride also and we've had to quickly swerve to avoid being hit by burning cig butts.
Would these people feel comfortable lighting a match and throwing it out the window? I guess they would......

Used to see it all the time at stop lights when there were more ash trays in cars. Door opens, ash tray gets dumped.

I agree completely. I've seen people dump their overflowing ash tray out into the parking lot near the liquor store at Clark Plaza in Wolfeboro. It's toxic waste, and we all know where it eventually ends up. It's the same attitude that leads to this:

I feel badly for the good folks who volunteer to go out every spring and clean up roadside trash.

Unfortunately, the odds of the culprits being arrested & successfully prosecuted for their behaviors are slim to nil.

This past weekend, I was reminded of this rant. Wafting downwind from a bass boat was the unmistakable odor of cigar. 'Wonder where that cigar butt went?

Then I was reminded that I've been unconscious to the life-threatening danger of beer bottles tossed from boats. They'll float to a stop, where wakes will cause them to break along shorelines. (Where little kids frolic barefoot).

By comparison, cigarette butts and poop have no equal to beer bottles tossed into the lake. LFOD?

It only takes one bottle to ruin somebody's summer—or worse!

I can't say I've searched my own shoreline for the broken pieces that can make a work of art—like this beach in California:



A tourist attraction, where no bottle fragments are allowed to be removed.

They're out there: I posted about a floating quart bottle hitting shoreline rocks in 2005:

Just north of Mendocino. It was a trash dump in the 1800's. Now a tourist attraction. I found an old circa early 1900's spark plug embedded in stone there...Yeah I know I wasn't supposed to, but I took it home, although the sign does say do not remove glass...no glass involved in my deed.
