12 yo killed on Newfound Lake

My heart and prayers go out to this family, this father, and their daughter/sister. I can't imagine the pain they are feeling at this moment. May it be a reminder that boating safety is of paramount importance. I myself can sometimes fall into the trap of thinking I "know what I'm doing" around a boat, but the truth is the water and fast boats are both dangerous. I usually make my kids wear a life jacket but do not wear mine, as that's how it was with my parents. But I think I'll try to set an example for them and wear one right along with them. Be safe everyone!

This is a parents worst nightmare from hell. One moment of distraction has shattered a family's lives.
It's going to be hard to get this out of my head after watching the news story.
When I'm out tubing and skiing with kids and grandkids I often think of that accident on Paugus bay where the dad backed into his son....also the fatal ski accident in Wolfeboro and it makes me paranoid about safety.
Motor shut down any time a person in the water is near the boat and total awareness and attention on other boats, navigation markers and other obstacles.

Very sad! I saw a kid last weekend riding the wake of their boat after dropping the tow line. He was less than ten feet from the back of the boat. Is this a new trend? It looked very dangerous.

The wakesetter boats are designed for this.

Similarly, there's a boat near me that tows a board almost impossibly close. From the shore, it looks like ten feet, and gives me the chills. I've been assuming it's an illusion or something else I don't understand.

This is performed behind V drives or inboards.. Very unlikely to hit the prop, actually probably safer than tubing, skiing etc due to the low speed, biggest concern is CO poisoning.

also the inboard prop is located a at least a foot or more forward of the stern of the hull (not the swim platform) and if you fell forward the boat would not be where you fell
danger is the driver abruptly stopping the boat with someone riding the wake right there behind the boat as you could run into the back of the boat causing injury or getting caught under the swim platform. spotter or someone needs to tell the person to bail if an abrupt stop is needed

It just looks very dangerous to me.

I understand what Hill Country is saying. There are few really true accidents, most are a chain of unintended events, decisions made or not made that lead to a tragedy and in most cases they are foreseeable and preventable. Lessons Learned. But now is not the time for recriminations as I am sure everyone is overcome by this family's loss. It is as someone else mentioned, "my worst nightmare", so much so that I made a decision a long time ago that I would never pull anyone behind my boat. I could not take it if anything happened to my grandson while I was pulling him. So easy decision for me.
