Old Military (?) Gun on Meredith Bay

So,

I have lived in the lakes region my entire life and have lived walking distance from the Lago for the past 2 years... I've never learned the history of the old military-style gun concreted into the ground along the walking path, next to the lighthouse down there. Does anyone know the history of this?
