Wow. The article said they spent close to a million on this operation. Wonder what they will do in the spring when the water is too cold for people to wade over to them at the sandbar?

I think, as was aforementioned, a sturdy, stable shuttle craft (small pontoon?) would fill that bill nicely.

Out of curiosity, and in need of a new destination, we took a ride to The Dive late in the day yesterday from Buzzells Cove, with the intent to check it out, and maybe do a drive by. We did not expect the welcome and encouragement to stop by by the handful of customers on board (4-5) as well as the staff. We had 2 dogs which we were told were welcome to join the owners dog already there. I dropped off the dogs and 3 other family members directly to The Dive, dropped anchor and waded over. We had a beer, and I warmed up by the fire, and stayed about an hour. Betsy, Jamie and crew could not have been more helpful and appreciative of us coming out on the grey day. We will be back and wish them all the best.

I surely respect the entrepreneurial drive behind spending that much money. To me they either had the money to begin with and could've just kicked back and relaxed or took a big risk. Either way kudos from me on taking the chance, not many of us would have.

I think you and joey's argument (besides being senseless), depends on the definition of what "is" is!!! Does anybody know what "is" means?? Did we ever figure that out back in the 90's???

To the dismay of many on this thread, it seems as though that those in charge of the Dive have laid out a pretty thorough business plan for success, and didn't just "build this ugly barge" and "hope" for the best. I'm not surprised, especially with the amount of investment. Maybe now, (although I doubt it), all the armchair quarterbacking can cease a little bit and give the Dive some credit for crossing all their T's and dotting all their I's, and taking a chance on trying something different to pursue the all American dream!! One thing that hasn't been mentioned though, (unless I missed it), is the capacity. Does anyone know what the capacity (number of people, not weight) is?? Just curious.

Since they only get 5mph out of 2 250 hp outboards I’d sacrifice an engine and 2.5 mph for a bigger beer cooler!

Does anyone still think the dive is going to move around? Except for a ticketed event or private function it appears the Dive will anchor in Smalls. It will take at least 2 - 2 1/2 hrs to get to Braun. At least 10 miles and it travels 5 mph tops and that is if weather is favorable. At least that to get to the Margate plus would have to leave very early morning to avoid channel traffic. By their own admission on their FB page when anyone asks when are they going to anchor somewhere else they answer,"its a long ride elsewhere" They say they need proximity to Smalls for supplies and to shuttle employees. Looks like residents of the Smalls cove area will have to endure the view.

Give them a chance. They have only been operating a few weeks and didn’t get a whole season in this year. I hope they are using this first abbreviated season to work out all their kinks and next season will be different. I have passed by quite a few times and have been there once. It is crowded at times obviously especially from Friday to Sunday but in my opinion they spent 600k and will need to move around to increase business and awareness. Not everyone is on this forum. Passing beneath the Wiers Channl bridge yesterday I turned back to look at the distance between the water and the bridge and even though I had thought the Dive wouldn’t fit under previously, now I think it might fit.
Of course, actually The Dive actually going through the channel is another “thing” entirely. |

Yes that’s what I am saying. Give them a chance to work out their issues including supplies and storage and hopefully next season they will venture to other sand bars. Like Margate, Braun and Patrician Shores. I to not think it is fair for them to stay in one location but they are a legal permitted business and with any new business adjustments and changes need to be made especially in year one. They have NEVER said they are definitely not leaving Smalls Cove. I wish them great success but at the same time move around as not to disturb the Smalls Cove area everyday. Wonder if adding a tow boat would help for Braun & Margate or is the barge hull the limiting factor?

I finally was on board. Had a burger. It was pretty good, cooked as I requested. A bit of a wait, but it was a busy day, and being on the lake means enjoying the view, so a wait wasn't a problem.
The staff was very friendly and anxious to help. There is no need to bring soggy cash from your bathing suit pockets with you, they take credit cards. They have music and TVs at the bar showing sports games, so you can catch the Sox or the Pats, if you feel the need for that while your on the lake. Here is some nit picking for you boys here on the forum so you don't think this is a fake review from someone that hasn't actually visited The Dive: They need better anti-slip treatment on their stairs going to the top deck. I saw someone almost fall and those self adhesive strip tape treatments they are using are already getting loose. They should fix this quickly with some non skid paint or another type of permanent treatment IMHO. Don't peek into the window of the helm station. It doesn't give you a "ship shape" feeling, wires are everywhere and things looked a bit jury rigged at best. It looks like they are using some sort of large surplus military generator for power. I wonder if they found a deal somewhere? Their all around nav light is mounted on top of the spinning sign, mounted at a 45 degree angle. So they can't run at night under the one bridge as designed if the sign is folded down for clearance? I was surprised that the MP would ok the 45 degree angle, but maybe it's ok? Summary: Go onboard and enjoy it! The crew is nice, the food is as good as any other place that serves pub type food (and better than many), and you're on the lake with an unbeatable view with your friends! What more could you ask for?

Thanks for the report. Can you access without anchoring and walking to The Dive? Or is everybody dripping wet?

On the forward starboard side the is an area were you can pull up and drop off passangers. I dropped a crew off there last Thursday. Unfortunately the captain will have to get wet.

Some young person should start a shuttle business bringing people to and from The Dive, do it for tips and gas money.
I can imagine this could be a good parasitic business, especially as the water gets a bit cooler. Call it "The Shuttle", or "The Ride to The Dive".

We decided not to drop off anyone the day that we were there because there were so many swimmers accessing the ladders and kiddoes swimming in that area while their parents were onboard. We had a fun time, I'm thankful for a great captain that was able to maneuver through the anchored boats and swimmers.

I believe he is referring to this area on the starboard bow

It's like a open doorway and then you can go up the stairs. You can't unload passengers from the port side near the ladder. There are too many people in the area and its extremely shallow.

Hmmm. So, she'll drop me off, find a space, set two anchors and swim back? Then I have one for the road, while she goes out to pull in the anchors and come back to pick me up? I vote for Rich's shuttle.

Just before 6:00 pm tonight, WMUR showed a picture of Weirs Bay. Great weather on the lake. Looked like a picture of the Dive in the foreground, only the roof/canvas cover visible.
Can anybody confirm? |

The shuttle boat isn't in this picture. The day we went, the shuttle was tied to the bow, making it tricky to pull alongside where you have the red circle.

No -- he is right --
We went one of the warm days last week & their center console shuttle boat never left the bow area after running out with Ice & other supplies. Would have been extremely challenging to slip in there and drop someone without tagging the bow of the shuttle boat. Which begets the next question, How long into the Season will people want to wade in chest high water for a purchased drink?

I know I am going to catch a blistering set of posts after this but --
Now that we finally made it aboard, I cannot honestly see how the Dive will survive in the long run. Do NOT get me wrong - it's a great novelty, I love it as an attraction (destination with guests) and my wife & I had a great time aboard for about an hour or so -- with Great staff too I want to point out!! I do hope the new owners prove me wrong as it is actually kinda cool -- However, I just don't see it enduring But our season is so short. Within a weeks time, I doubt there are many who are going to want to wade in chilly/cold chest deep waters for a $15 drink. Listen to a DJ or participate in Karaoke from 6:00- 9:00pm It would seem that her "sailing" speed & staff food/logistics prevents her from participating at other sandbars (Margate, Braun, Patrician, et al) which is understandable, yet a tragic flaw. They are certainly doing well now - but - is that the "novelty" effect ? We went mid last week & I was actually shocked at the number of boats anchored - given the week before Labor day when most MA schools start we tend to find the Lake generally quieter and in fairness to the dive I would estimate that perhaps 20ppl or so aboard the dive with us with a steady flow in and out. Charters have been mentioned, but where will the Dive pick up / Drop off ? Certainly not at her home port dock ? and what will that cruise entail at her sailing speed ? Should she venture off on an excursion -- before you sign up, take a look at her "Wheelhouse" ….. I was AGHAST -- considering the money invested & what they did on exterior appearances (kudo's)-- the owners should be embarrassed by the Wheelhouse ….. and CERTAINLY should have left the door shut while guests were aboard! Okay -- swing away at me Â…Â….. just my honest opinion now having been aboard.

Wading through water that's 3-4' deep is totally doable down to 60-degrees, especially when the goal is to get on board The Dive. Is totally possible to wade through water up to your waist when it is in the icy cold 30's knowing it is only for a minute or two or three. As long as one is wading, and not swimming out over one's head, is all doable. When walking along with feet on the bottom, wading the cold water is mostly psychological; if you want to do it, you can do it. The first minute is the coldest, and then it gets less painful, and more doable.
Who knows, maybe the Dive will get a small 8' row boat for rowing the customers back and forth; on-board ..... a-home .... a-shore .... home boat .....a-yuh ....... bottoms up! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Will do anything ![]() ![]()

We were at the W. Alton sandbar on Saturday and "raced" The Dive in. Was a little annoyed to have to compete with it for a spot, and it takes up a lot of real estate.
That being said, it was very quiet up until we left at around 2 and, other than just "being there," it wasn't much of a nuisance in terms of excessive noise, etc. (Why I am/was concerned about this is that W. Alton sandbar is/was the last "family" sandbar.) THAT being said, I still just don't get it. Pack up the boat, drive to a sandbar, get off the boat, get on another boat... I also agree with Phantom. I do not see the Dive surviving. Unless they can do enough charters, private functions to supplement the sandbar days and that is if they can repower it as it can not get out of its own way now. Season is too short. I don't think there will be enough customers to brave the cold water to walk to the Dive early and late season. That leaves July and August and maybe a weekend or 2 in September but even then many people stop coming to the lake after Labor Day. There has also been a lot of banter on IBOLW regarding the marine patrol ticketing many patrons because of there being more boats at Smalls so boats are anchored too close to shore in a NRZ, too many boats tied together etc. Home owners have been calling marine patrol to complain and marine patrol has responded with much more ticketing at Smalls than ever before. I did give it a try myself. The server Naomi was very good, the staff very attentive. However, the drinks were average in quality, size and above average in price. The food no better than any other establishment at any of the town docks. I agree with others its a "novelty" and I would not go back when I have my own boat, can serve my own cold beer and cocktails on my own boat, serve my own BBQ food on my own boat for much less money and go somewhere much quieter to do it. I wish them well and hope I am wrong but at this time they have a lot issues to resolve to make it work. |

To your other comment about MP -- the Day we went, just as the Dive got firmly settled and in place, to my laughter, a MP patrol boat showed up --- I will give them KUDO's for all he did was (verbally) push people out of the shoreline 150' spacing and was gone for the rest of the day ……………….. my personal opinion is that a few people make a real loud noise about MP "picking" on them & ticketing -- most times we have observed this season is always simply a verbal. After all - the law is the Law and it is pretty well marked with buoys. if no room -- come earlier! Again -- I like the Dive -- wish them well and hope to take many a visiting guest there for a kick for an hour (on their dime hopefully) !

Have never seen a barge like that powered by two stroke 250hp Evinrude e-tecs. Seems like the Lake Winni construction barges go with Honda which is a four stroke and probably has way more torq than a two stroke. Tow strokes are notoriously not very torqy which translates to not enough pushing power.
What does the Coast Guard use on their patrol boats? CG uses Honda. Maybe a tugboat powered by a diesel towing The Dive on a tow line could be doable?

Considering the experience to owners of The Dive represented they have in the marine industry I am extremely surprised at the level it is underpowered.

Your idea about striking a deal with Watermark sounds like it could work as far allowing the Dive to move to a different sandbar. However, I don't think that will make them any more money and may cost more because of paying Watermark. Still a short season as previously discussed.
As far as marine patrol ticketing, based on FB post they are ticketing now not just giving verbal and moving them out. |
