Today, NBC's Sunday Morning featured loons on Lake Winnipesaukee. Two women are swimming around all of our wonderful lake's islands in an effort to raise awareness of these beautiful birds. ����

So, here's a totally related and incredibly important question for today ..... are loons attracted to eating Cheez-its (original flavor) just like the Canada geese? Do not know but suspect that they probably would be inclined to eat a Cheez-it what with its salty, cheesy taste. Canada geese and mallards all totally love to eat Cheez-its, so is probably true for the loons, too?

"Loons swim underwater like a fish eating torpedo with webbed feet for a propeller."

Could be it's the salty flavor that immediately attracts the Canada geese and Mallard ducks, and Cheez-its will float on the water surface for like 30-minutes before falling apart, plus can be thrown like a Frisbee for 30-feet.

So, what's bright orange, tastes salty-cheezy, will float, and gets thrown like a Frisbee?

Today's homework question: Do loons love to eat Cheez-its just like the Canada geese?

Hmmm...dunno about loonies liking cheez-its but I'll bet you can attract 2 swimming women with a box or 2!

Those bright colored floatation things that all three swimmers have are called 'swimmer's safety buoys' and it seems like a good idea for swimming this lake what with the cool water, wind, and waves.

It looks like they do not really provide any swim buoyancy but get towed along as a safety buoy, just in case, getting towed along behind for the ride. As everyone knows, it only takes a teaspoon of water going down the wrong pipe to maybe upset a swimmer out in deep water .... so why take a chance for drowning ... plus is good for a rest stop.

A foam noodle belt works good too, and provides flotation, because it gets worn around your waist as opposed to getting towed along, as you swim.

With a foam noodle, home made, flotation belt, even the most under-powered, uncoordinated, non athletic, non swimmer slow-poke will have no problem swimming from Meredith, all the way to Wolfeboro, in one sunny afternoon

If you caught that Loon as it lands, that is a rare event to capture on video! Wings are kept quite high, and feet are not used in the landing.

I've seen several landings on Winter Harbor's waters, but most landings are hilariously uncoordinated, with the Loon "splashed" and tumbling—feet over head—due to wave action.

When my sister and I were kids, we would swim around Stamp Act Island on Lake Wentworth with just an old inner tube. Of course we were usually about 10 feet from shore most of the time, but we thought we were pretty adventurous for a couple of kids.
