Skunk. On an island.

So we have had a little skunk appear, kind of late in the season. One of the Gilford islands. We should get it relocated, right? Any advice? Thanks!

They’re pretty easy to catch in a Hav-a-Hart trap. Bait the trap with some canned tuna. If you catch it approach the trap slowly and throw something over it like an old towel...that will make “Stinky” less stressed. Now, where to take it?
Alternatively, you can call a pest service to remove it.

Ive seen services use a can of wet cat food in a have a heart trap that they wrap with a plastic tarp or a really thick burlap tarp. they wrap the trap before setting it to protect from spray at catch time and release time, and if they spray they just throw out the material and hose down the trap

I was told the wet cat food is best cause it really only attracts the skunks and not the raccoons

A friend live trapped several at her barn, used a large towel over all the trap but the entrance. When a skunk was trapped, approached from the covered end and tossed another towel on to cover the entrance. Upon release uncovered the exit door and walked way back. None of the skunks ever sprayed.

As for raccoons passing up a snack; sounds doubtful to me.

Unless the thing is a problem just leave it be. Where there is one, chances are there are others.

I thought the same thing, until we had the guy trap and relocate for us, and only skunks were found in the traps, no raccoons or anything else

Years ago, we had a skunk visit us here on East Bear Island. Our dog was very, very unhappy to meet it. We suggested that the offensive visitor go see its friends on Welch Island. 🚿

It boggles my mind that people will trap these things and release them on someone else's property.

It is illegal to release an animal without the permission of the property owner.

That is what we are afraid of! How many can a five acre island support? Do they swim?

Walking the dogs in the mornings I have seen several the past couple weeks. Real pain the arse if you have dogs. Trap it and kill it. Problem solved. Can't think of any value they add.

don't have a problem with what you said at all, but they do eat grubs which is a positive, as it is a warning sign for your lawn if you start seeing skunk holes in the grass in the morning

That is very true. I also saw one in my yard one morning and it was attacking an underground be colony as well. But overall if you ever have a dog sprayed you come to hate skunks quick!
