The point of eating out is first and foremost to eat at a place other than your own home.

I often eat out alone, e.g. for lunch, and when I do I read a book or a magazine.

If I owned a i-phone I'd have no qualms about accessing the 'net while eating; why shouldn't I?

In this case the family probably has little to say to one another: it's all been said before, so let them each revel in their own chosen activity.

"Live free or die," ya know?

...or to eat something you can't/don't wanna make, or not do dishes, or to fill in space between other activities instead of going home, or for a different view...

I find this a very sad vision of our children's future.
