Smith Cove was dredged for Fays Boat Yard. The sand ended up in Weirs to make the beach

The dredged portion of FBY is located west of the gas dock area nearest the road. This area was dredged to create a harbor for the Marine Patrol. The MP never used this location, instead they established the facilities where they are now located where Glendale Marine was. ⚓️

Actually Barney, the original business was Goodhue Boat Yard who sold to Marine Patrol and then moved to the building where Glendale Marine was. MP purchase Glendale Marine for more space needed for parking but was a loss to the island people who used that facility for boat storage, rack, etc.

I think you'll find on other threads that the eirs channel dredging spoil was used to expand Weirs Beach. Dredging in Smith Cove was done where Gilford YC is now, originally to rebuild Goodhue Boat Yard. After the GBY fire in 1958(?) Goodhue rebuilt onsite with a concrete structure (fireproof). I think, overextended, he (Captain Jack) sold to the state for the new MP HQ and started anew on land he owned in Smith Cove. Fay's expanded around the same time, but not by dredging, moving into the deeper section of the cove for sail boats. Recall, the area between the GBY gas dock, now part of Gilford YC and Tabors, now Glendale YC is shallow and sandy, not suitable for larger boats or marina operations.
