Every year, there is an official post where people can make a guess for ice out. I cannot seem to find it. Has it not been posted yet? If it has, can some kind soul direct me to it? Thanks!

Yes it is right in the top middle of the home page on the forum. Guesses only accepted from 2/1 to 2/29

I don't think you can see it on the Tapatalk / Winni Forum app.

Go to the full site and as Joey said, it's right at the top center of the home page. Hope this helps.

This rain and above normal temps is gonna make that ice go quickly in my opinion!

I think of "quick" as different from "early". I think "early", but the second week of March as we had not too long ago may be a stretch. In yesterday's mail I received an entry form from a realtor for an Ice Out contest. The deadline to enter was March 20. That could be after the fact.

Speaking of ice, does anyone know if there are still folks who still cut the ice out of the lake in blocks, and store it in an "ice house" for ice or cooling use thru out the spring, summer and fall?

I have an ice house on my property and from the best I can tell it was last used until the late 1940's. Available electricity doomed any further use after that point.

Laconia between 1880 & 1890 Ice House ............. kinda cool you have one to keep the liquor cold.

In the 50's my grandparents had a camp in Weirs. We use to go to the (Laconia) Ice House right where McD's is on Paugus Bay. They would cut the ice on the Bay and store it in a large building. My grandfather would pull up in his Oldsmobile. A big block of ice would come down a chute from the upper part of the building. I remember a big burly WOMEN would grab the block with ice tongs and throw in to the trunk. My grandfather use to put the block in an old coca-cola freezer on the porch and we would keep all the soda pop in it. Cool memory

There were two ice houses (separate ice companies) on adjoining lots across the street from McDonald’s. The largest one was the Independent Ice Co. and nearly filled the entire lot from where the animal hospital is today to Bayside Cemetery. The building had 12 bays, was 300 feet wide and 144 feet deep and 44 feet high. It was a company out of Massachusetts or Rhode Island, I believe, and they shipped ice to Boston and beyond. It operated until about 1934. The building was then sold and used to grow mushrooms under the name of the New Hampshire Mushroon Co. The building was destroyed in a spectacular fire in 1936 and the land was then purchased by George Barton who erected a cabin colony on the lot known as the Ox-Bow Cabins.

The other ice house was a smaller one built by John H. Dow. It was purchased by William Rudzinski, Sr. in 1918 and operated under the name of the Lakeport Ice Co. It burned to the ground in a fire in 1929. The Rudzinskis disassembled an older ice house located a few miles away and moved it piece-by-piece to the lot where it was reassembled. They then resumed the operation and continued to harvest their ice from Paugus Bay each winter as before. The name of the business eventually became known as the Laconia Ice Co. After William Rudzinski’s death in 1941, his wife continued to operate the business with the help of her sons. Their last ice harvest was in 1964.

www.laconiaicecompany.com/home/about is located behind the McDonald's and Saint Vincent de Paul, on the other side of a brook that flows into the lake, and has been there since 1913.

Understand Laconia Ice has some well preserved, old antique ice that's older than 1913, and is just as good as the day it was cut from the lake. Ice just gets better with age and each passing year. There's simply no ice like old ice ..... as long as it don't melt! ...

Large blocks of ice were cut from Winter Harbor as well. I don't know the method of cutting, but I suspect that a single long steel wood-cutting blade was operated by hand. Chainsaws were still new, and as heavy as the outboards of the time.

The blocks were then pulled uphill by horse and chain, and stacked intact under canvas and piles of wet sawdust. It was to be another four months before put to use.

As a youngster, I might have asked why my glass of iced tea had sawdust pieces at the bottom.
