Box Anchors - anyone ever use these?

Wondering what anyone's experience is with these box anchors?

Seems that they might struggle on a rocky bottom?

I looked at them a few years ago when doing anchor research for my pontoon, and they seemed heavy and clumsy and came with caveats regarding the strength of the shank tip/eye.

I looked at them last week when doing anchor research for my jetski, and they seemed heavy and clumsy. The smallest one, which was recommended to me by other jetski owners, was 15 pounds I think. By comparison, the Mantus I ended up with is 2.5.

Love our box anchor! Yes it takes getting used to, but it is the most forgiving anchor on the market. If the wind changes direction, it flips over and resets. How can you be upset with that??

Interesting concept.

I look forward to someone with first hand experience reporting how they work in rocks.

It looks perfect for sand and if it works as well in rocks they may find a big market with their claim of drastically reducing scope.

Have a 23 foot pontoon. Fantastic in sand. Would never think of using it in rocks

I have never used a box anchor on Winnipesaukee but used one on Lake Mead for several years with very good results. On the western lakes like Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, etc. they are the anchor of choice and I don't see why they wouldn't work well on Winnipesaukee. Yes, they are bulky. Regarding rocky bottoms, Lake Mead is all over the place in terms of the bottom (sand, gravel, rock, etc.) and the box anchor is designed to work in all conditions (but ideally where the rock would be loose).

I've used mine on a 20' toon and now on a 22' tri for about 4+ years and have 0 complaints.

At the sand bar, I tend to use a Danforth off the front, and the box off the rear.

If I'm just out offshore I tend to use the box as the Danforth does not readjust as well and I tend to bring up all sorts of branches/debris if I do find myself swinging around a lot.

Box is slightly heavier, but it folds up smaller than the Danforth.
