Good evening all. My wife and I are contemplating a move to the lakes region possibly within the next year. We spend 2 weeks a year up on the lake but we never pay attention to the news while we are up there. Before we decide on a town/area we like to get a feel for the current events taking place. In everyone's opinion what is the best newspaper we can buy a subscription to online to see whats going on with the lakes region.
Thanks Len |

The Laconia Citizen, http:www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Citizen_(Laconia) published from 1926 to 2016 will always be the real #1 newspaper for the lakes region.
It lost out to the www.laconiadailysun.com, a free paper, because it is free and costs 50-cents less than the Laconia Citizen which used to cost 50-cents. Basically, the lakes region lost out on its real newspaper because people would rather take a free paper than pay for a 50-cent paper ..... or something like this! |

The free LDS is available online and is worth a few minutes a day at most. It isn’t even a “daily” despite its name.

The citizen lost out due to its liberal writing. The LDS is more centered. Of course this is just one mans opinion.

We prefer the Granite State News. It's a weekly, but it provides good coverage and interesting articles relating to our area. We don't care for any of the NH 'state-wide' newspapers.
What specifically are you looking for? |

Laconia Daily Sun is a piece of crap paper. No real news at all. Read this forum and not sure how you feel about Face Book but there are MANY user groups on there related to the region.

I actually enjoy reading the LDS. Does a descent job in keeping up with the local news. They can get better by digging a bit deeper into each story. Also, follow up stories need to be addressed. One example that sticks with me is the child death before last Xmass here in Laconia that has yet to be resolved. Never been on Facebook. This blog and LSD are it for me. Must remember, if you want the real story you must visit each local watering hole!

I agree with WZ--LDS is good. I also appreciate Granite State News. Those and this forum are a nice trio. Before we criticize local papers too harshly, let's keep in mind that Google, Facebook, et al have absolutely crushed the economics of most of the news industry. We're lucky to have any locals left at all.

I remember when I was a kid working at a variety store I would have to stuff 300 Sunday globes. They were so thick with advertizements. Now they are the same size as a daily paper and the veriety stores will carry about 10 to 15 Sunday papers. Print is a dying business. I think the only reason people still buy them is to get their stoves and firepits going.🤣

Lately the Granite State News has less and less news and of course no sports section any more. I had a feeling when the office moved to Meredith it wouldn't be the same. I wonder how long it will survive.

Newspapers are for starting the kindling in the Wood stove and for setting paint cans on while I stir. The “junk” mail provides as much as I need for those purposes. Only thing they were ever good for was the Sunday funnies....
