Sawyers Closed for the Season
I drove by Sawyers earlier today and saw the sign that they are closed for the season. I understand it was even more difficult for them to get help this season and were only open for food Thursday through Sunday and were open 11am to 9pm for ice cream.....take out only. Nice older couple that owns it but they have been trying to sell for a couple of years now due to the looong hours.

I went and read their reviews some time ago after people on this forum expressed disappointment with the state of things—price, food quality, etc.—and they weren't very good. I just checked again now, and it appears to me that some may have been removed because ones pointing out that their workers are treated poorly are no longer there (I don't know if it's true or sour grapes—just mentioning what I'd read).
In any case, given the reviews there, the comments here, and Covid's impact on business, it was a tough season for them—you can hear the frustration in many of their review replies—which is too bad. I've never been, but Sawyer's has been a mainstay in the area for years, and it's no bueno when a place with such historical value—especially a mom-and-pop—struggles. I think it's entirely possible that a lot of these small businesses that have had ongoing problems in obtaining staffing may well decide that Covid-19 to be the straw that tipped the scale, and just decide to permanently close.

Ask a local where to find good food and value
I have seen many of the older establishments like Tamarack and Sawyers not transition very well under new management.
Fortunately, several business appear to be doing ok. I was down in Alton the other day and had a great lunch at Shipley’s Takeout. Then went over to Stillwater’s for ice cream. Hopefully, these establishments will pull through. Support your local owned businesses. Dine out or take out. |

Tamarack and Sawyers are the first 2 places I went to when we first came to the area in 1996. Would love to see both pick up the quality of their food and I certainly would support them much more.

Given the new business environment, it seems to me that places such as Sawyers would be ideal for a new owner with a lot of children to purchase, esp. if the kids are older teens.
Have the whole family run it, and keep on producing new young-uns to take their place. Chinese have done it elsewhere, as have Mexicans. Work hard, make it successful and it can keep the family together and thriving.

That’s unfortunate. Their sea salted caramel ice cream was amazing. I know then we’re having a hard time finding staff. College students going back and lower income workers are sticking with unemployment benefits right now.
