Water Softner System Companies?

Looking for recommendations for companies that sell and service water softner systems.

My Culligan water softener system needs to be replaced. It's aa salt-based (ion exchange) system, that re-generates on cycles. Has a salt brine tank.

Two companies I plan to engage are Gilford Wells, and LaChance in Belmont.

Can these systems be installed by a regular plumber ?

Also, would like other vendor recommendations, and system Brand names people have installed in their homes.

Have the same culligan setup. 22 years old. Had the two vendors you identify here come out to give me an estimate. Also added a third. Second Wind out of Concord. All three were within a couple of hundred of each other. Never completed the exchange as the cost to replace is very expensive

The water softener is still doing it’s thing. The iron and re-generator had to be repaired. Second time in three years. The Culligan rep told us it has had a good life. The other two reps discussed replacing the pellets in the iron removal unit, but wouldn’t warranty it. My frustration is when the power goes out I can’t reset the time it does a regeneration as the display has failed and parts are no longer available. The water does test out well so we have put it’s replacement on the back burner

Have you considered a water conditioner vs softner. No salt needed. There are magnetic conditioners also available.

To answer your question, I had Culigan tech review, and he determined that the 'control valve' at top of tank, would not reset to 'home position', on Cam control. Consequently, it would constantly try to re-generate itself.

The problem was isolated to the 'control board', a costly replacement.
Being that the entire system is 15 years old, it wouldn't make sense to replace, as other components of system are at their end-life also, and need replacement in the near future.

I have used Allied Clearwater and found them to be very good. However, I really wonder about all the salt I use over the course of the year (I figure it is between 6-8 40lb bags for 8 months of use.) It seems that every year we need to get the system adjusted and check, which I am OK with but the spotting on water glasses is persistent. Plus, when we are away for the winter, we put out tubs of water to try to keep the house from drying out too much and when we return in March, the amount of dry residual at the bottom of the tubs really make us think - are we drinking all this stuff?
Curious of what others think about non salt water softening solutions.

I'm really happy with the Second Wind, especially with after sale service. They bid competitively a complex job (very small space), answered a ton of questions, explained the pro & cons and now come every year to support our re-install (we remove the system in the winter.)

I've had a good experience with LaChance.
