Rail Road Tracks

Thought I heard that the tracks were not going to be open to snowmobiles this year. Anyone know if that is true?

Active railroad tracks by law you are trespassing. So yes snowmobiling is not allowed.

As far as I know, the tracks were open to snowmobiles after Jan 6th, if there is enough snow. Meredith Groomed a section of them today for sure.

There should be a sign with the open dates.
I work Bristol now instead of Meredith... so I haven't seen the signage. There should be two in Meredith as you cross Main St near the Hobo and Middleton Building Supply.

The sign is red, has the symbols for the various user groups and should have an open and close date on it.

I hadnt' seen any of the signs (stop signs and other) at any of the crossings as of a week ago, at the crossing near us in Pagus Bay. Thought I had heard something about the tracks staying active for trains this winter but if they are grooming.....

I don't know that they are grooming.
The NH Parks website should get updated information - I believe tomorrow.

I didn't see a listing for the Concord-Lincoln corridor, but one of the local clubs would have contact information with an update for the season.

Not true. Meredith groomed them last night. (Need more snow)

The inside width of steel railroad tracks is 48", and the width of snowmobile skis varies from around 42-48" wide depending on the model.

Right now the tracks are up above the snow while the ties are snow covered.

Who knows but maybe there are railroad track adapted wheel/tires for use under the front two skis with two rubber inflated tires on a snowmobile for using it on a railroad track?

And, what about meeting up with a moving train on the railroad track? There are NO trains. Trains in New Hampshire have been totally replaced by trucks that all use those black round thingies ..... called rubber inflated tires made by Goodyear and other tire makers. America moves it on a truck and trains are so last century! .....

FLL the standard gauge for railroad tracks is 4' 8 1/2 ". See the following link.

Trains do run in NH, even in winter. Not all, but some do.

That rail line closes in the winter months; hence why the red signs have specific dates of operation. It is open to all formats during that time, except for the newer versions (UTV and 4X4). It travels from as far south as the near the Belmont town line to north into Lincoln. From Belmont south, it is closed to recreational use.

The greatest violation of the rules is walkers during the summer months in violation of the active rail line statutes.
