Small Gas Tax Refund Year

I just filled out my gas tax refund and only used 94 gallons this summer.

Don't send it in before January 1st.

I did that one year and they sent the form and receipts back to me with a letter stating they didn't want it before January 1st.

Apparently that was way easier than setting it aside until they were ready to work on it.

This summer it was actually cheaper for me to by gas in Massachusetts and bring it up to the lake......So Tax Rebate isn't even a thought for me....

I don't even know how many gallons I went through this year but it was alot....
10 gallons every time I came up.... hummm lets see May 3 trips, June 3 trips, July 2 trips, August 2 trips, Sept 3 trips, and Oct 2 trips.... so at least 15 trips that I am recalling so 150 gallons.....

I do love my pontoon boat, so much more fuel efficent then the speed boat, that was more like 20 Gallons every time I came up....

Anyway I digress...

Out of curiousity. How much of a gas tax refund do you get from claiming 94 gallons of fuel? Is it worth the effort?

If you buy your boat gas on the lake at a marina, are you entitled to a refund on that gas as well? Basically do they charge you gas tax at the marina? I probably went through 200 gallons in various boats this summer.

$.22 per gallon refund, so $20.68. It's the refund of the road tax included in the gas that, because it's used off-road, doesn't need to be paid.

After the stamp and envelope, I'll take home $20, or enough for three reading visits to Sal's Pizza.

You should totally do it—200 gallons is like seven reading visits to Sal's Pizza!

So yes part of the the charge at the Marina, is the road tax, and why this rebate business exists. I have looked into a couple of times, but honestly never felt like it was worth my time....

Mostly I feel that why because I don't fill my tank on the water, and thus am already saving a considerable amount, by just doing that... Then I have years like this year, where I actually bought the gas in Massachusetts, and brought it up here, and save well over $.22 .... most of the summer the differential was about $.30....

Last I never remember to save the dam reciepts, and often fill up my truck at the same time and well so to me it isn't worth the extra effort.

With that said, I know folks that have gas guzzler cruisers and even performance boats, and well it adds up to even more the a few visits to Sals pizza.... some of them are able to take the family to the 99 for dinner....

You are entitled to a refund of the road use tax no matter where you buy the gas.

Many marinas will keep track all summer and mail you the form and your receipts after the end of the season.

If you fill your boat, jet ski, or whatever at a gas station on the road you can save those receipts and include them when you mail in for your refund.

You can also get a refund for your snowmobile, chainsaw, lawnmower.
I check the box that donates some of my refund to either Marine Patrol or lake protection. We don't gat many chances to actually SAY where our tax dollars go and I think those are both good services that are underfunded.

I always wondered, and never asked.
Since the gas taxes paid by motorized trail users go half to BoT and half to F&G, is that amount reduced by the amount that is refunded?

They used to estimate the usage at 100 gallons per registration and transfer 50/50 to those general funds.

As far as I know, the refund applies to any off road use and you just fill out the form. Tractors and lawnmowers would mostly apply to contractors who use more gas, but you can fill your 5 gallon can and use it for several off road purposes. The form says no refunds less than $10, so for most home users it doesn't matter. My recollection is that 30% of the estimate of non-refunded road tax goes to F & G and the rest goes to the state general fund. Bureau of Trails is part of F & G, and I think they have some internal latitude as to how the money is split up.

BoT is part of NH Parks... which was a division of DRED(name has been changed). We went to 50/50 BoT and F&G on snowmobile and OHRV around 2007. Before that it had been BoT and DoT.

I believe the increase from 18.4 cents to the 22 cents all went to the DoT.
But it was all based on an estimated usage of 100 gallons multiplied by the number of registrations.

I just never knew if they took that estimate, and then reduced the amount by the refunded portion... the RSA didn't make it seem so. I believe the actual wording of the RSA transferred $9.20 to each the Bureau and Department general funds.
