Default Don't Give up..

Basset hounds, with their incredible sense of smell -- maybe he got on the trail of a scent he wanted to follow. anyway, don't give up. keep calling/whistling, etc. so even if he can't see you / his house, etc., he will be able to hear you calling for him.

We have a cat that disappeared March 1 for 53 days, during which time there were snowstorms, rain, etc. He just re-appeared in the driveway one night. We had about given up hope for his return and there he was, like nothing had happened.

Good luck.

My wifes boss belongs to a cat. He stops in every couple of weeks , friendly as can be , mooches a can of tuna , spends the night and disappears again.
She has spotted him in other parts of the neighborhood
Hope your dog wanders home soon
