Amerigas Gotten Any Better

Any customers of Amerigas finding dealing with them any better and are you noticing smoother delivers from a year or two ago? I ordered online last week and I'm right in the middle of my delivery windown now. I "think" (??) I've seen some slight improvement just wondering about other customers. If I do not get a text/email this week about a delivery being made I'll be back to them looking into it. I do not burn a real lot and ordered at about 40% so this was sort of a test run for them. Awhile back they had me pulling my hair out.

I ordered a small refill from them in August, I only order 1x per year since its a seasonal place and they came within 10 days. Ordered online, got a few text updates, easy peasy.

I hate that I get charged to "rent" their tanks but that's the cost of not buying enough propane each year.

Thanks feb... Since opening this thread I received a text saying they were delivering today, 12/5 so we'll see. I'm cautiously optimistic their better to deal with than in the past...

Had Amerigas for many years.
On call delivery.

few/many years ago tank getting low. Called Amerigas. Told could be up to 10 days.
Waited/watched 10 days. Nothing.
Called Amerigas again. Was told that weekend days do not count for the 10 days. So it is actually up to 14 days. And Amerigas charged for tank rental.

Waited/watched on 14th day. No delivery. Called on the 15th day.
Finally got delivery the 16th day.

Yes, there is automatic delivery.

The price for the Amerigas propane for me was about $1.00 more than competitors.

Amerigas no more for me.

And attempting to telephone Amerigas was a nightmare.

Amerigas used to have an office on Union Ave in Laconia. And customer could walk in and speak with a real human.

Today. Have Eastern. Can go to Rochester and speak with a real person if needed.

There is also a cooperative/group that one can join. For even a better price.

Now/presently I own my own 500/400 gallon tank. So I can go with any company if I wish.

I used to run into the BS TheProfessor describes but they seem to have straightened some things out. Yes, if you have deliveries made via a phone call which I also do you need to give them a good week in advance, no real biggie. I own the tank no hassles there. When I used to call other (more reliable) companies for deliveries I found them to be more than Amerigas, don't know if that's the case now.

May I ask where you got the tank? Did you purchase it from Amerigas?

Purchasing a residential tank can be a tad difficult. At least a few years ago.

The advantage is that one can go with any delivery company. But normally, one has to open an account.

One propane person told me that the propane tanks are all leased. That a seperate company owns all residential propane tanks. Not sure if this interpretation is true or not.

Amerigas for me anyway - I had to pay a yearly rental fee.

Yes, I'm 99% sure the tank was purchased from Amerigas it's been years now. You can order deliveries from anybody when you own your own tank however as another poster stated you may need to open an account. Opening an account is easy probably 10 minutes per company online if you want to do it yourself. If opening it online doesn't work of course you can just call the particular company and do it over the phone.

I stick with Amerigas cause we "supposedly" get a preferred rate in Suissevale, if it's cheaper and how much I don't know I can't be bothered spending time investigating everybody's prices, I do not burn that much gas it isn't my primary source of heat.

Ever since the house blew up in Krainewood, the propane companies have been quite extensive in their analysis.

Ah yes now that you mention it I guess I did need a s/n or something off the tank when I opened a second account with someone else. I do not recall a special visit probably checked everything out when the delivery was made.

My "Latest Generation Wireless Propane Tank Monitor" that Amerigas installed over the summer is reading 3% tonight!! I have been monitoring my tank level closely for the last 10 days! Given the below freezing temps I knew we would go though more fuel than normal. Many calls and updates on my Customer Portal have not resulted in a delivery. Last Friday the portal said delivery by 1/26/25. That has now changed to 1/27 or 1/28. I hope I get a delivery tomorrow!!!

I am unable to call another company because Amerigas owns my tank.

Forum members, can you provide information on how you changed companies and got rid of the tank from Amerigas? . I would like to have a local company provide our propane and not this gigantic, unreliable and faceless company.

I had Rymes for years until it changed to Amerigas. Rymes was excellent, Amerigas not so much.

When I switched to Rymes years ago they bought my used inground tank from my previous supplier. I think this is pretty standard in the business.

Contact some other companies and ask what they do when they acquire a new account.

Good luck having Amerigas come get the tank. Spend MANY hours over 6+ months trying to get them to come get their tank last year. I even told them I would bring it to their Laconia shop. I switched to Staford and they told me they couldn't use Amerigas' tank, so I used all the gas and moved it out of the way so Staford could install the new one. It was only a 120 tank. But nothing but issues and they couldn't give me any answers of when or how to get rid of the tank.

Any customer can switch propane companies.

I my case I had the new propane company move the old Amerigas tank to edge of property near street. Contacted Amerigas to remove old tank.
Took 9 months for Amerigas to pick up old 500/400 gallon tank. After many phone calls.

Few of the tanks are owned by the propane companies. Tanks are leased/rented. Something to do with accounting/depreciation/insurance//taxes or some sort.

I own my own 500/400 gallon tank. But that concept has been beaten to a pulp on this forum before.

I knew they were bought out but I didn't know it was Amerigas???? Great! Rymes was bad enough, now I have to deal with them and from what everybody has said it won't be fun.

Years ago I bought a house in Mboro... at the settlement there was a line showing an expense for the gas in the two tanks (a few hundred bucks). When I went to my new place for the first time, the gas line was disconnected and 'tamper proof' seal plugs were installed on the tanks. I had no fuel for heat or cooking. The prior owners canceled their account, and the gas company (Suburban Propane?) managed to race out to the property in a manner of days to prevent me from using gas... Then they insisted that I must pay for the gas in the bottles (again) and to hook up the line. I was remodeling and decided at that moment to switch to an electric range and electric baseboard, since the house was only 3-season anyway. I called the gas company and told them to come get their tanks. Of course this went without a response for weeks into months... I finally had to have my lawyer send a letter telling them to get their tanks off my land in 10 days or they will be discarded at their expense. When I went up to the cabin the next weekend they were gone...

While I loved Rymes, I have not had any issues with Superior. I did have to find someone else to clean and service my oil burner though since they no longer offered that service.

I didn't think it was Amerigas that bought them out either. Rymes had the hardest time figuring out which of my tanks needed filling (we have 3) so the manager finally came and went over them with me and then they still couldn't figure it out! It didn't seem that hard. Then a few years ago when we had that bad windstorm that did a job on Bald Peak, my generator ran for days and I called and asked for a delivery and they wouldn't deliver because my normal delivery wasn't for two weeks. I tried to explain to them about the storm and that my generator was running for days but they didn't care. So I called Wolfeboro oil and they came and delivered to my generator. (We own the tanks.) From then on I had Wolfeboro oil deliver to my generator because I knew they would come when I asked them to.

You are correct. I misspoke.

I was happy with Rymes and not their replacement. It turns out it was Superior. I have had to call them for service and the response was not as good as Rymes.

I had the same “clean out” issue w/superior at my home in MA. I was told by them that they can’t find technicians to staff the position. After hearing your story, me thinks they can’t find technicians because they don’t really look for them.

Not sure where you live in Mass but I changed to Savino oil out of Stonham and found them to be excellent and honest!
My 30 year old boiler hasn't run this good in years!

Thanks. I just might look into them. I used Holden out of Peabody for years & they were great. Superior bought them for their gas business. I am a “will call” oil customer because I went from 200 gl/month during the heating season to +/- 200 gl for the season after installing mini splits. Last time I called for oil I was told 7 to 10 days for delivery. Holden was there the same or next day.

I'm also a "will call" customer as I installed mini splits also. I only use mine for heat in the spring and fall, turn my oil heat on at Thanksgiving, my wife freeked out over the electric bills last winter.

My electric bill is also higher but it is more than offset by my heating oil savings

I think because I was a new customer, the owner came out for the first service. I actually thought it was time for a new boiler, and he talked me out of it, said mine was better than the ones built today. He told me the only reason to change it is if it leaks.
