Over the years, I've had nests built in various places around the buildings, in protected places. It seems that if I put a piece of scrap wood at a steep slope over what otherwise would be level, then the bird goes elsewhere to find a mostly level platform that will support a nest without it sliding off. Perhaps you can rig something with a steep slope over the top of the AC unit, designed so as not to interfere with air movement to/from the unit.
