That's a surprise comment coming from Scotty Kilmer about never rotating the tires on his Lexus, Matrix, and 3rd vehicle there which are all older cars with probably plenty miles.

Of course, tires are easy to see and easy to inspect the tread plus the NH state inspection always takes a strong look at tires and brakes, like the #1 safety items in the yearly inspection.

I've been following Scotty Kilmer (YouTube) for a couple of years, and agree with everything he says.

As for tires, tread longevity seems to be foremost when buying tires, but I find the ride (and road noise) increases with age.

(That is, the tire's age).



Likewise, I don't normally rotate tires; however, I might make an exception this Friday. My vehicle is going in for its third alignment in a month! Maybe they can get the steering wheel straight, test-drive it, stop the front tires from a noticeable rippling across the new tread and squealing on turns on smooth asphalt. If they can't get the toe-in corrected this time, I will have to adjust it myself.

Scotty is usually correct. Scotty corrects lot's of misinformation out there.

BUT.

When I do purchase new tires (4) - I get a good professional alignment.
Learned the hard way with an older car with 4 new tires. Wore out on one side way too early.

Not all cars need an alignment. Some never get an alignment and tires wear fine. I just don't wish to take a second chance with 4 new tires.

Tires on the front and rear of vehicles operate at different loads and perform different steering and braking functions, resulting in unequal wear patterns. To gain maximum life and performance from your tires, it is essential to rotate your vehicles's tires. Refer to your vehicle owner's manual for mileage recommendations. Usually tire rotation is performed between 5,000 and 7,000 miles. Common on performance cars are tires designed to rotate in a specific direction; these can only be rotated front to rear and if different tire sizes are used on the front and rear axles rotation is not possible.

You know about four years ago I had a tube installed on a single problem tire on my Troy-Bilt snowblower at a bicycle repair store and they put the tire back on the rim, backwards, so the directional tread was going in the wrong direction. Contrary to logical thinking it makes absolutely no difference and the snowblower moves along through the snow just fine like it made no difference that the directional tread is backwards.

Like Scottie said, radial tires are self-aligning and it's a waste of money. When you detect an uneven wear pattern, it's time for an alignment.

It happened to me. As above, I finally got a correct alignment within a year of new radials.

After a new replacement of a leaking power steering rack, the fronts started squealing in turns on smooth asphalt and were developing a rippled outer surface. (Felt, not seen--a sign of too much toe-in). Crosswinds would cause my vehicle to jump within its lane.

The steering wheel is now straight, so it's like old times.



The original service order included a "four-wheel alignment", which doesn't fit my circumstance (solid rear axle), but it's a 70-mile round-trip to another alignment shop, so I kept my mouth shut.

I rotate my tires every 10K miles. I never get an alignment unless I see uneven tire wear, or I have to replace something in the front end.

I never rotate my tires. The money saved goes toward new tires when needed. If I see uneven wear, I take it in for an alignment. I routinely get 40,000+ miles on a set of tires with my Outback.

I'm weirded out by how many people don't rotate their tires, though I guess maybe it's because I drive SUVs/trucks that lose ride quality/quiet when tires wear unevenly.

On my 4Runner, I rotated every 5k and got 60k on two sets of tires. The third set was like new at 137k trade-in.

I've got 18,500 on the Bronco (since June 10th!) and the tires I've got on there are wayyyy too expensive to risk uneven wear.

Of course, rotation is free given I buy my tires at Town Fair...

Good luck with Town Fair... I bought my son four new tires there a few months ago and they mounted two inside-out. Yes, that's a thing his two passenger side tires had the word "inside" facing out. I called the store manager and tore him a new one he had nothing he could say just told me he's sorry about five times and of course fixed the problem. I've also in the past caught them not rotating all four when I bring a vehicle in for that service. One time I stood at the door and literally watched the guy not (correctly) rotate all four. Again, I got the manager and told him why don't you go get the tech and we'll talk with him right now and ask him why he did that. Of course he didn't want to do that with me there he said don't worry me and him will be talking when you leave. I rotate every oil change (5,000-6,000) miles, always have, always will. I have my garage do it from now on and just pay them..... They actually DO IT!

The only issue I've ever had at Town Fair was with balancing, but all my vehicles have had aftermarket wheels and oversized tires, which aren't always easy.

They've always made sure to get it right, though.

10/10. I've got 20k on it since June 10th. We take it everywhere and often on Bronco group rides.

Essentially, Ford fixed everything wrong with the Wrangler while keeping the fun quotient.

I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who thinks it might be the right vehicle for them, but feel free to message me with any questions!

I've used Town Fair (Rochester) for my Silverado and Honda CR-V. Never an issue. Rotation is free. I make a lot of trips to that area, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart etc. so I try to schedule a rotation every 8 -10K. Sometimes it's a bit of a wait but Dunkins is across the street.

Tire Kingdom caused me so much grief, there's no room to put it all here.

In sum:

* They'd installed one foot of wheel weights on a rim that was bent. A straight rim went as the spare.

Tire Warehouse in Laconia, close to Belmont, did me a totally super-duper tire repair service on my Subaru on a Sunday afternoon, last September.

I made a too fast U-turn on Rt 5 in Meredith close to the big intersection, and smacked the sidewall of a new Nexen tire into the tall granite curb which punctured the sidewall on the tire.

After jacking up the car and replacing the tire with the silly spare, I drove to Tire Warehouse where all four tires were purchased about a month earlier. It being a Sunday I did not expect too much to be happening but Tire Warehouse was open with one employee there, working. And, about 30-minutes later I was on my way with a new identical Nexen tire via the Tire Warehouse warranty and it cost $25 for the removal and replacement. So, I was good to go, there, on a Sunday afternoon at Tire Warehouse in Laconia!

PS I had a very good experience at Belknap Tire last summer and would definitely have worked through them for my Bronco wheel/tire package if they were closer to our off-season place.

When I bought a new set of tires for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma, which I drove to NH from California, from a dealer in Meredith now out of business. They failed to balance them.

This was during COVID and they were the only supplier, at the time, that I could find that would allow contact with the public.

It was during my first ride on RT. 93 at speeds over 60 that I discovered severe vibrations. I had assumed balancing and alignment had been done. I was wrong.

I had to wait for Irwin Toyota to re-open to the public and they balanced and aligned my wheels and life was good again.

On a rear wheel drive, pick-up truck with five same rims and tires including the spare, how to do a five wheel tire rotation in your driveway using one small floor jack?

Remove the spare from below, remove any wheel and replace with spare. remove wheel diagonally across and replace with wheel, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera ........ all-done safely, using just a small floor jack.

Was that easy or what ......... !!! ...... because having an available same spare rim and tire makes it much less complicated and no need for TWO jacks, or a jack and a jack stand because the fifth wheel makes it all happen easy-peasy.

This is good for any vehicle, rwd, fwd, or all-wheel drive when it has five identical wheels and tires as opposed to a temporary spare.

I have been getting my tires from Costco. They fill with nitrogen, really did not know that previously. Then every 5,000 miles they balance and rotate. Have a 5 year warranty. So, this can be done no matter where you are at the time.
My convertible needs new tires, and the dealer quoted $1,850. There are different sizes front and rear. Going forward necessary to pay for balancing and rotations. Cannot rotate on this car. Costco quoted a price of $,200. Michelin tires.

With staggered tires, I'm guessing BMW or other highly engineered ride. If yes, you really want the best match for tires. Michelin is a good brand, but the match depends on the model. You might want to check out tirerack.com--excellent online data for choosing tires, great prices, local mounting through partner shops.

Three cheers for Valvoline Instant Oil Change-Laconia. Got a new blue NH state inspection sticker, and got the four tires rotated, all done in 40-minutes, in and out with no reservation. Just show up and do it. It, a N.H. state inspection cost $60 which is $10 more than at most other service garages but it was worth it because it happened like immediately plus the technician was totally excellent ..... probably over qualified or something with good communication and good positive energy.

Is this blue 2026 NH state inspection sticker the last NH state inspection ever, ever, ever in the State of N.H. for the next unknown length of years, or what?

I assume Valvoline Instant Oil Change-Laconia will offer a non-state inspection as an available option starting Jan 1 or Feb 1, 2026. Is your money and your car safety!

Anyone think of a good name for the NH non-state inspection that will probably be offered all across the state starting January 1, 2026?

There's got to be some OLD cars and pick-up trucks out here in N.H. needing some repair or needing new tires and brakes or a cracked windshield replaced with no insurance coverage or something whose owner hopes to slide on through till Feb 1 on their old red 2025 NH inspection sticker ....... good luck, hope you don't get stopped by the cops for driving a red sticker in the last and final N.H. state inspection month of January, 2026 ... .... hasta la vista N.H. state inspection stickers ...
