Yeah, I agree with everything stated above, but you know how fickle and unpredictable the American electorate can be. I mean, who would've picked Jimmy Carter? Or the unknown governor of Arkansas? Rudy is ultimately vulnerable because of his personal life, and the fact that he's from New York. Who knows how an Italian Catholic plays in Kansas? Even though he's tough bird, McCain's age may come into play. And, let's face it, Mitt's a handsome fellow. Americans are shallow like that. In the end, I guess it all hinges on who the Dems nominate. And that should be interesting. If you're a junkie like me, this is a treat. Pass the popcorn. And my 'No Mitt' stance is purely selfish and entirely Lake-oriented.

Mitt doesn't have a chance to win. But we have to suffer through this summer, the primary isn't until spring 2008. As a leading candidate, he will have a full secret service detail. Now, if the guy wins the primary we'll have a yet another summer. But at least in 2010 it will be all clear.

I can't tell you how hard this is to say, but I'd rather have Hillary become the next president of the US if it meant my beloved and relatively undiscovered (I did say relatively) Wolfeboro would not be turned into a Circus. Just close your eyes and picture Wolfeboro being highlighted on World News Tonight as legions of news folks follow Mitt around for his summer vacation? Talk about ugly! Thank God Mitt is a Mormon and a flip flopper (not quite to Kerry's level, but closing quickly), two factors which should limit his broad appeal to the US electorate.

As I sit here in a ice storm in Pa, I agree with Grant and secondcurve that if Mitt is elected the town will become a mess. I vision it to be like the 4th of July everyday, except satellite trucks rather than parade floats. Imagine all the loonies that would show up to "see the sights". The one good thing about it would be our rental rate out at the island house will be increased!
I'll pitch this idea, if he wins, cut back the taxes on the local people (landowners) and use the newly introduced revenue to the town to make up for the reductions. How about designating a media friendly area where all media park their trucks and pitch tents. Stage the area by the town dump or the sewage treatment plant.

There is an awful lot of "unelectable" candidates running around right now, so I guess a Mormon Governor of Mass has as good of a chance as an untested Senator named "Obama", a female senator from New York, ect. I might be wrong... but I don't think the protection he is afforded this summer will be actual secret service. I think that is only given once someone has secured the nomination. But having said that, I am sure his campaign will probably hire some sort of protection.

As for his chances... I am pretty nervous. His backing has been growing among House of Representative members including the former speaker. He is also the most conservative among the bunch save for Sam Brownback, but his campaign hasn't gotten much traction yet. You don't suppose that he would be far sighted enough to realize that the town will be forever altered (even after he is president) and stay away so he has a peaceful place to retire do you?

I spent a lot of time in Kennebunkport during Bush 1's first term and all I can say is you have no idea. It would be a disaster if something similar happened in Wolfeboro. Fortunately, I don't think Rommney has what it takes, but if the wind blows correctly it is not out of the question. I'll say it again, if it came down to Hillary and Romney I'd go with Hillary......I just got that throw up taste in my mouth.........but what other choice would I have?

I was talking to a friend of mine in the secret service and he has been assigned to the Mitt Detail. He said they are gearing up with six wave runners combat ready, a boston whaler with twin johnsons and a 50 cal. machine gun, plus depth charge racks on the deck.
They will be setting a perimeter within a 5 mile area around the Mitt compound and Wolfeboro for a no fly- no boating area when he is arriving and departing, which the times of such will be kept confidential. A no fly zone during cocktail hours and his booze cruises will start a 4pm on thursdays afternnoons continuing each day until Monday. Boaters cruising during the alotted 2 hour public boating period are allowed in the area, but aren't allowed to face or look at his compound for the fear of the public seeing Mitt skinny dipping with Monica Lewinski.

The secret service is doing criminal history checks on all the lakes region citizens and visitors, they will be relocating any "questionable" people or known trouble makers to the northern end of the lake. Then they will be placing devices on their ankles that will trip an alarm should they venture back to the Wolfeboro area. At that point the violators will be shot or tarred and feathered... or both.

There wasn't a huge change, really - Walker's Point was off-limits unless you had a badge or were already cleared to go thru (i.e. you lived in the area). It didn't really change K'port all that much - if anything, I think it helped the economy a good bit because it gave the small town more exposure. The small town is still a small town after all the hubbub.

That being said...

Ol' Mitt doesn't stand a chance... he might get a nice office position or something, but I can't see us electing a president with the name "Mitt"....

What that article failed to mention is that Romney recruited and paid for travel and lodging for a bunch of college students to attend the poll according to Thursday's New York Times. Here's an excerpt from the Times article:

"...Romney campaign nonetheless is paying for three vans, scores of registration fees and at least a half dozen hotel rooms to pack collegiate supporters into the event...Romney campaign planned to have at least 225 student volunteers at the event with 90% living close enough to eliminate the need for housing or transportation. Last year the event drew more than 4,000 activists. But only about 600 people, mostly students, participated in the poll...."
"Stephen Dewey, a student at Harvard, said he had recruited seven students who support Mr. Romney to travel to the conference in a van provided by the campaign. "For those of you who have never been, it is a great opportunity (especially when it is free)," said an email message circulated by Mr. Dewey."

So, I guess you can't read too much into that result!

He said they are gearing up with six wave runners combat ready, a boston whaler with twin johnsons and a 50 cal. machine gun, plus depth charge racks on the deck. They will be setting a perimeter within a 5 mile area around the Mitt compound and Wolfeboro for a no fly- no boating area when he is arriving and departing, which the times of such will be kept confidential. A no fly zone during cocktail hours and his booze cruises will start a 4pm on thursdays afternnoons continuing each day until Monday. Boaters cruising during the alotted 2 hour public boating period are allowed in the area, but aren't allowed to face or look at his compound for the fear of the public seeing Mitt skinny dipping with Monica Lewinski.

Then they will be placing devices on their ankles that will trip an alarm should they venture back to the Wolfeboro area. At that point the violators will be shot or tarred and feathered... or both.

There wasn't a huge change, really - Walker's Point was off-limits unless you had a badge or were already cleared to go thru (i.e. you lived in the area). It didn't really change K'port all that much - if anything, I think it helped the economy a good bit because it gave the small town more exposure. The small town is still a small town after all the hubbub. That being said... Ol' Mitt doesn't stand a chance... he might get a nice office position or something, but I can't see us electing a president with the name "Mitt"....

Despite an impressive background, he still won't get my vote since he started running for President the month after he was sworn in on Beacon Hill. It's too bad he didn't take the time to try and fix some of the problems facing the Commonwealth.

What that article failed to mention is that Romney recruited and paid for travel and lodging for a bunch of college students to attend the poll according to Thursday's New York Times.
