Cottage Ceiling Boards

I am wondering if anyone knows where I can buy some replacement ceiling boards for my cottage. They are a 1/2 inch thick, wood fiber material that come in 4ft by 8ft sections. I believe that they are/or are similar to a product called "Homasote". I see them in a lot of old cottages up north. I had a roof leak last summer and need to replace about three of them but I can't find them anywhere. Thanks for your help.

If it is just plain homasote (Semi water proof grayish color) or Celetex (sp) (brown color) which is not damp proof, either can be purchased at most any lumber yard or large discount stores like HD or Lowes.

Homasote is available at Boulia Gorell Lumber in Laconia. I purchased a few sheets for our camp this past summer. It was around $28.00 for a 4x8 sheet.

Boulia's also delivers if you don't have access to a pickup truck.

Actually, I believe it will be Aisle 18, in the Building Materials Department. One whole side of Aisle 18 is devoted to ceiling tiles of various types. Tomorrow I'll take a thorough look and see if I can give a more detailed list of the various types.

Well for all my good intentions, I was unable to check out Aisle 18 today. One of the crew is very sick with the flu, and so I took his place out on the road doing deliveries today. By the time we returned from the road at around 6:30PM, and finished all the paperwork, I had forgotten completely about it!

Tomorrow will hopefully see me in my office and around the store, so I'll try again!

Well, I did my research today and was actually stunned to find out how many different kinds of ceiling tiles there are!

Doyboy - can you help me narrow down the scope a little bit? Above you indicate that the sheets are 4x8, so that narrows it down a little bit already, but still leaves quite a few choices!

Because they're 4x8 is it safe for me to presume that these tiles are nested in a racking system which is suspended from the ceiling above, and attached at the walls? If so, are they plain or patterened? Are they white or another color? Are they a heavier rigid panel, or a more lightweight panel that is slightly flexible?

If the panels are more rigid, is there a pattern inset into the face, or are they smooth surfaced?

Any descriptive information you can provide will help me narrow down to just a few choices.

Pepper,it sounds like Doyboy is talking about 4x8 sheets of homasote.That is not actually a "ceiling" tile although some CT are made from homasote.Our camp had homasote in all the ceilings.It's a material that's made from pressed wood\paper fibers.I'm pretty sure Lowes would carry it.

I think SIKSUKR is right. I've been told that it is a "Homasote type" product. I had a guy at a supply house tell me it's old stuff that used to be called "1/2 inch building board". It is indeed a wood fibre board which is not heavy like sheetrock. They are not exclusively for the ceiling and are nailed directly to the strapping (ie not in a suspended system). The boards I have are plain but with a rough texture and a white face to them. Since I will be painting the whole ceiling anyway, the white face is not critical.

After a thorough search of the entire Ceiling Tiles area I am sad to report that the product you have described is not to be found. I queried a few folks on staff, and they were aware of what I was looking for - and sadly confirmed it's not in our inventory.

That said, I had a chat with the Zone Manager for that area, and he's going to do a bit of research and see if we're able to locate some.

If he has any luck I'll post back and let you know!

Just wanted to let you know I gave you the wrong price for homasote...I purchased 2 additional 4'x8' x 1/2" sheets this weekend at Boulia Gorrell in Laconia. They were $21.34 each not $28.00. They also had the lattice strips that come in so handy for covering the seams.

Hope you were able to locate some for your repairs.
