Hello Forum! Long time lurker, first time poster.
I plan on purchasing a Hobie 16 or 18 SX as soon as I see one I like at a good price. I was originally going to get a Laser but I took out a catamaran at my club the other day and that quickly reminded me why I love these overpowered, multihull beasts so much. Anyway, I am so excited I am already thinking up of names. For the Laser, I was thinking a race-related (and I'll admit, a bit immature) name like "Slaughter on the Water." ![]() That is my favorite name so far, but I was thinking of naming it something Winnipesaukee-related (so when I go to the Olympics they know exactly where I'm from. ![]() ![]() I can't really think of anything. I want the name to be original, racing/speed related, and stand out. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Ex: lake name "Don't Hit Me!" or "Right of Way!" racing name "In Front" or "Follow Me" or "Ahead of U" I would recommend not mixing them up as the results could be disastrous. ![]() Good Luck! Jetskier ![]() |

After reading your other post, how about painting UNREGISTERED right on the transom?

I sail today with my tricked-out Hobie Formula 18SX. (And own three catamarans, including the Tornado 20). You mention going to the World Olympics? The Olympics have a Tornado 20 class: a tough boat to beat for top speed, acceleration, and epoxy lightness. What's it weigh, 350 pounds? It's "a machine", not a "beach cat". The Tornado accelerates so fast I've had several "man-overboard" simulations—that being me—nearly ejected off the transom! ![]() As far as a boat's name, stay away from making a political statement. My boat's name was to have been "Wind Tax". (With an arrow pointing to my newly-required registration numbers). I never applied the name after seeing the MPs stop so many catamarans—no point drawing attention to myself. ![]() Tip: Always sail a fast cat with a crew. They're there to deflect the cold water from hitting you! ![]() BTW: Though I've sailed fast cats in the Atlantic, the only place I've "gotten air" is off Lake Winnipesaukee's impressive boat wakes. Great fun, but it can get wet!

I have only been on any type of sailboat a few times. I don't do well on any type of vessel that has that many "moving parts" above the waterline.
The term I heard most often.. and often just a little to late was... DUCK ! Maybe that's a good name. ![]() ![]()

I did have a question about the H-16 vs. the H-18 SX. How do they compare stability-wise? Is the 18 SX faster on all points of sail? Not much info online; that's just what I've heard.

Not entirely related, but I saw a prius (sp?) the other day and the license plate was OPECSKS. I really thought that was clever.

APS, I wouldn't mind a political name. I'm a very political person. I'm a (should I say it? Hmmm... What the heck...) HUGE Republican. So I'll think about a "tax" name with an arrow pointing to the registration number. "Weather Tax," "Air Tax," maybe. It hasn't been done before, has it?
Everyone else, I like some of the other ones. Keep 'em coming!

I like the statement names.
Your Benchmark (or a variation Winni Benchmark) A reflection of the boat's abilites and your skills. Hopefully they will be reading it on the transom. |
